The dude is a fucking asshole

hear me out. Dave Chappell remains my favorite comedian. But hes got a shit take when it comes to trans people and his latest special, which from a strict humor judgement is easily his worst special ever released, is a bitter old gen-Xer using his craft to try to win a twitter argument through popularity appeal

Hes obviously a very intelligent guy. No matter what your views are regarding trans people, unless youre a genuinely abhorrent monster, you gotta concede that they are people and deserve the same rights and freedom that everyone else does.

But he is smart enough to know that what he is doing is going to result in a very real surge in violence towards trans people and the number of trans kids and teens killing themselves.

And he is just cool with that? No. He doesnt get a pass just because hes funny.

People on Twitter keep posting Carlin's criticism of Dice Clay, to apply it to Chappelle. I think that's a pretty bad example - Dice Clay literally got banned for life from MTV in 1989 and didn't make specials about getting cancelled lmfao

I couldnt help but laugh when he joked about how someone being in the wrong type of body is an inherently funny predicament. Not because I agree with the joke but because he was being mean spirited with the joke yet also recognizing that trans people do exist and face something very real and very overwhelming.

I gave his new special an honest shot so I could know the full context of what he has to say and none of it justifies or excuses what he is doing. Hes a rich man with dignity and power, and hes choosing to use that power to just hurt people who are already suffering through some shit.

He was bringing attention to how members of that group behave in different situations, and how those actions can violate his own feelings/rights. This was obvious throughout.

There was the joke that spoke about a white gay guy that was quick to call the cops on him, meanwhile a black gay guy wouldve understood that calling the cops on a black man couldve been bad.

Then also when he said, I think that maybe if the slaves had some baby oil and booty shorts, they mightve been freed sooner.

The point hes making is understandable but since it doesnt clearly fall into any of the compartments that we, as a society, have created for ourselves it becomes controversial.

I'm honestly surprised this whole Chapelle thing has remained a hot topic for so long.

I know part of it is that Chapelle himself is stoking it for attention, but it's weird. Rowling notably did way worse and seemed to get brushed under the rug relatively quickly to promote new merchandise.

I think it is because Netflix 'sided' with Chapelle when other employees started acting irrationally.

If he had been trying to make a bit on intersectionality, he failed the moment he decided that he would mock the bodies of trans people while hiding behind the friend he tokenized. If that was his purpose, then the piece is an unambiguous failure of comedic writing.

In the end, all he managed to effectively present was petty envy of LGBT+ people's efficacious push for civil rights, as if a black trans woman wasn't the root of Pride.

The only joke I heard as an example is the Caitlyn Jenner Woman of the Year joke which is perfectly fair... what did she even do, other than run someone over with her car (or whatever)

I found his latest special to be the funniest one on netflix. It was pretty good. The other ones weren't that funny.

I don't think trans are off limits for being made fun of in a comedy special, but trans people are allowed to take issue with it if they do. ANYBODY being made fun of in a comedy special has a right to be offended if they are. If trans people aren't immune to being made fun of, as people boldly like to claim, then Dave isn't immune to criticism for said jokes.

Dave is definitely past his prime now that he's basically an old man yelling at the clouds. I feel like Dave is trying to navigate this "outrage culture" in the modern day, but trying to do so via fax machine. It comes off as awkward and trying a little to hard to stay relevant.

HornedLion consistently has the worst takes on the board lately. And for this board, that's saying something.

I watched it, I thought it was funny mostly. I thought Dave made some really good points and also said some things that I really don't agree with. I also support any one who wants to use their platform to criticize him or his special. People are allowed to have opinions and the problem is everyone wants to shut down someone else's opinion. You have some people who want to cancel Dave and others who want to cancel the people who criticize Dave.
