Are Marvel movies a blight upon cinema?

https://www.indiewire.com/2021/12/james-cameron-marvel-films-epic-denis-villeneuve-dune-1234686837/

James Cameron Says Marvel Features Not Epic Like Denis Villeneuves Dune

The debate with filmmakers about Marvel features rages on and entering the fray is Avatar director James Cameron. In a recent Directors on Directors interview with Variety, Cameron sat down with Dune director Denis Villeneuve to discuss everything from filmmaking technique to Villeneuves adaptation of Frank Herberts novel.

Cameron starts in early on how different Dune is, citing that it has an epic quality he defines as similar to Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings series and the work of David Lean, helmer of Lawrence of Arabia. When I think of films that have epic events in them, like lets say a Marvel Universe film where whole cities get destroyed and so on, they dont feel epic to me, Cameron said to Villeneuve.

This isnt the first time a director has spoken out against the massive filming juggernaut that is Marvel. Villeneuve himself brought up the studio back in September. Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others, Villeneuve said. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I dont feel capable of being pessimistic at all.

Like Cameron, Villeneuve also drew back on Old Hollywood for his reasoning. Villeneuve went on to say, Just think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposal and, therefore, political. I have never felt like a loss or an impediment to have a generous budget to do what I wanted to do. Upside down. Who said that a movie on a big budget cant be artistically relevant at the same time? I am currently thinking of people like Christopher Nolan or Alfonso Cuarn.

Villeneuve also recently told French outlet Premiere, If were talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but theyre all cast in the same factory. It doesnt take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted.

Sounds butthurt because he knows Avatar 2 is going to fucking flop

Don't get me wrong, Avatar 1 was a visual masterpiece, but let's not pretend it was anything more than that

Yeah, I don't think anyone actually classes Marvel films as "epic" in the film sense.

So old man has point, but point is self-evident and no one really contests it.

You know why Superman II was shot differently from Superman: The Movie?

Because the director who took over for Richard Donner said, "We're not making Lawrence of Arabia."

They replaced the wide shots of the first film, indicative of an epic, with smaller frames meant to replicate comic book panels. Most superhero movies don't try to be epics. They simply aim to entertain.

My real problem with directors saying shit like this is that no one is even arguing the opposite.

Everyone knows that Marvel films aren't gonna place on serious "Top Movies of the 21st Century" lists. Even Marvel fans know that. The films are entertaining trash, and that's exactly what the fans want.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Its because the book Dune is an epic but the best part of Dune is the second half of the book, the first movie did not even touch that except for Paul and his mother joining the fremen and his fight with Jamis.

He is. It is especially the fault of the core audience being ignorant or tone deaf as well. Most Superhero movies are supposed to inspire you to want to do great things(Within reason considering super powers and plot armor don't exist in the real world) and be pillars for your communities, and not be selfish, criminal douchebags. But the most of the simpletons can't be bothered to think about what they are exposed to, strive to do the right thing, or try to teach their kids right from wrong. Hurr hurr Spider-Man / Deadpool quips are SO funny, Wolverine's claws go brrr, Hulk SMASH, Thanos go *SNAP* hurr hurr Murrica!!! hurr hurr

i consider Terminator 2 the greatest action movie of all time. but i don't consider it an artistic "film". same with True Lies.

you know why? because they were made that way. cameron knows this as well as anyone.

the only reason he was saying any of this was because he was with the Dune director who just recently had a movie released. it's all publicity. we put too much weight on these words.

I don't care for Marvel at all, but they're popcorn movies. Not everything has to be a philosophical or political epic. It is what it is, and there's nothing wrong with that. Let's just not pretend they're anything other than what they are. 5/10 caliber stuff. Eat some popcorn, see some big explosions, hear some witty one-liners. Have a laugh with your friends. That's it, and that's fine.

You wanna make a deep movie that makes people think then do it; I'm sure those kind of movies can be blockbusters if they are made well enough. It's just harder.

The book is beloved is why, the second half is what makes Dune an epic not the first half.
