Or should we assume that children don't know anything and just hope whatever goes on before they're old enough works itself out on its own?

I'm fairly certain that refusing to diagnose a child with pneumonia would be a terrible idea.

My daughter was diagnosed with a dislocated elbow when she was 3 years old.

Do you think the doctor was lying to us?

It's just a phase. She'd grow out of it eventually.

This seems really fucking specific... This is about that 5 year old transitioning isn't it?

*checks*

Yep... At least it sounds like you don't actually believe that children shouldn't be diagnosed with anything.

Not even that, 4-5 year old boys just aren't ready to sit down in a seat and be still for X hours. 5 year olds aren't as attentive as 7 year olds. A lot of kindergarten issues boys have that people diagnose as issues with ADHD could easily be solved by waiting a year till he's older to enter school. Or putting him in an environment where he's motivated to learn and actually cares about the material.

In any case, OP's referring to the transitioning topic to which I'd say if you had a daughter that decides she doesn't want to wear dresses and would rather wear pants and play rough with her brothers, how do you know she's not a tomboy?

For those who haven't caught on yet, this is a reference to how most people are fine listening to their kid when they say something is wrong and try to get them help. But when a kid is showing string signs of being trans, suddenly most of those same people are up in arms or at least incredulous/ say that the kid will grow out of it/ they're too young to know/ nobody should allow them to do anything to even explore the possibility.

And rightly so, imo. It doesn't matter why, at the end of the day doubting kids when they say there's a problem just leads to them not being able to trust adults.

In my day people didn't give a shit.

Teachers didn't care either.

I was what was called a slow learner or a goof off depending on the class.

They assumed you were just dumb, "the R word" or being rebellious.

I think they should get a real professional diagnosis on everything. Maybe a second opinion just to be sure. Then treat the problem the kid may have in a discreet manner.

Not just jump right into treatment plans and documenting the entire thing and turning it into a media circus where the kid is always in front of a camera.

If your 5 year old claims they have a tummy ache, you dont just start blasting them with chemo and make some vids for tiktok.

None of that's happening because of the standards of care and gatekeeping, you're literally making up bs examples that omit massive amounts of important details in order to make up a point.

that can be the case, or you have girls being under diagnosed for having the inattentive type or not being disruptive in class
so its like

but yeah dont ever diagnose a kid with anything
that cancer will go away eventually

If a child has something they have it regardless if they want to diagnose it or not. Ignoring it and pretending like everythings fine woild be a disaster.

And sometimes it's a different legit thing. In the late 80, early 90s it was indeed over diagnosed. I agree. I got diagnosed with it. Then later a doctor figured out I had aspergers

I think we may be too focused on quickly labeling things that some parents may in fact be affecting their children's development in negative ways. In the same way that telling a child "you're A so you cannot do B things" can potentially mess them up, the idea that "you're not A but actually C" could also similarly be instilled into them even if they're not C. While there are certainly processes like doctors and therapists that can factor into making sure the child is mentally healthy, it's not guaranteed all parents will go down that route. To be clear, I don't think this is likely to be any kind of widespread phenomenon, but it is something to think about.

Yeah, society assumed I was a boy and inadvertently caused me tons of emotional trauma that I'm only just now recovering from.
It's also terrible when doctors just arbitrarily decide what an intersex baby *should* be and amputate/patch up anything they feel "doesn't belong".
That...is what you're talking about, right?

This topic is also motivated by my own experience with adults and peers not listening, watching, or caring enough to help a kid who struggled his entire childhood to figure out what was wrong with him or who he was. There's still parts of me locked away from most people.
