Vesperia

Whichever one you want to play first.

Vesperia is very slow with characters learning abilities and moves, especially in the beginning. The game also has sidequests where you need to backtrack with no prior notice that are missable.

Berseria has the more modern QoL adjustments but lacks world map traveling and also does away with tp. It's faster paced to the point some say it's just button mashy. The main character does break the battle system in half once you understand her ability. So difficultly might be easier.

play Berseria first and don't play Vesperia at all

Whichever one seems more exciting to start...duh. Seriously...duh. :)

But if you just want to chat...

Combat is much, much different between the two. It may feel restricting playing V a bit if you play and enjoy a newer game in the series first. Berseria is free roam on the battlefield while Vesperia allows it with a button press, but doesn't have it as the primary way to play...it's hard to describe. It kinda matters how good a Tales player you are to really use the free roam option well. I'm middle of the road...play on moderate and it's a challenge.

Berseria is my favorite of the 6 Tales games I've played (currently playing Arise and still feel that way) and it's mostly due to the cast, though also because of the way it handles weaknesses and leveling up. Its certainly not the maps. It's maps are some of the weakest of all the games I've played. As much as I like Vesperia's cast, I relate more to Berseria's. Their emotional connection to the story just seems darker and more complex.

I'd go with Vesperia 1st since it's combat system can be difficult to get into when you're coming off a later game in the series. That's how it was with me going from Arise to Vesperia. Obviously it's not quite the same since Arise isn't Berseria (Never played Berseria so IDK how it's combat compares to Arise), but I'd assume that it would still be jarring to go from Berseria's combat to Vesperia's.

I played and finished Arise earlier this year and it was honestly the first Tales of game I finished lol. Maybe I'll go Vesperia first to get used to an older battle system and then upgrade to Berseria after
