German silent films were a bit preoccupied by the contemporary at the time. Theres this lingering sense that they were a cheap stageplay, and that a comedian like Chaplin had more intellectual clout. You're more likely to enjoy it if you just happen to stumble into watching it on accident, which the odds of that happening are infantilismal.
