overblowing quotes and painting a picture of a person based on that is one of the biggest problems with politics today, whatever happened to political nuance?
trump clearly says whatever Putins doing is a grave mistake and is going to cost him bad, him thinking putins smart is besides that.
tbh any political commentator who doesnt wear their heart on their sleeve would consider Putin smart based on the last 20 years.
he was also the first us president to openly start challenging China on its one way street trade arrangements, so very weird to see him get criticised over complimenting xi ping out of context.

finally let me pass my litmus test, Im not a trump supporter and I do see all of the problems in the way he operates, but this interview isnt indicative of any of that.

While he does describe Putin's "mistake", why the need to praise (which he did) him so much? AND the other two authoratarian leaders? And spend time with authoratarian leaders in Argentina etc while NOT spending time or praising democratic leaders to anywhere the same degree?

@Ruvan22 most presidents, former presidents are very measured with their words when talking about leaders of other countries, He praises them the same way he praised macron or any other democratic leader after meeting. Geopolitics is a very different beast, while Biden blurting out his wish for a Russian regime change may echo our sentiment, the words coming out of his mouth is dangerous - it could potentially help rally Russians to get behind their president as a defensive reaction amongst many other things.

Again, trump has done a lot of highly questionable things, the way he held on to his seat after losing the election was especially despicable, but offering praise about world leaders isnt really an issue.
if anything, I wish the diplomacy that trump displays in international politics would spill over to the other areas, that wouldve done him a world of good.

A) I think you missed my point - he ONLY praises them (afaik), he *hasn't* praised non totalitarian rulers. Past presidents (in office and afterwards) have done this - why is it appropriate to only these types of rulers?
B) I'm not sure what you intended by bringing up Biden - are you saying that blurting things out is bad? Like when Trump blurted out he believed Putin and didn't see a reason why he would lie?
C) How exactly are you defining "the diplomacy that trump displays in international politics"? Because most experts seem to have given him pretty poor ratings in that regard

Im not entirely sure if thats true, he praised macron, modi, the German chancellor or whoever he would go and visit. It seems hes only praising the totalitarian leaders cause he keeps getting asked about them more than anyone else.
also, we should be looking at what he actually did as opposed to analysing his pleasantries, like I said, he was the first world leader to start openly challenging China on the ridiculous one way trade agreement they managed to get away with for decades. he handled the Middle East a LOT better than how the presidents before him did. Matter of fact he was the first president to openly admit that the us screwed up in the Middle East which was very refreshing to see as a non American. He also went out of his way to broker a peace deal between Israel and the uae.

i brought up Biden to say, leaders should be very careful about criticising heads of other countries, it can be very easily used to unify the people of the country in question, and thats exactly what the Russian state media has been doing using Bidens comments.

lol The Russian state media has literally being using Trump to promote their actions and unify their people by claiming he supports them

But you praise trump and use Biden criticising them invading other nations as an argument against him?

trump says hes a smart guy whos made a grave mistake initiating the war, I dont see how hes praising Putin.
not just trump, but a lot of people where big fans of Putin before he initiated this irrational war. Its very reminiscent of Hitler being times man of the year, and being a big hit with the democrats till he started acting like the absolutely evil mad man that he was.

These are people who failed at literally everything in their life, who hate the world itself for passing them by, with knowledge they don't have and advancements they don't understand. They're constantly inundated with scams and grifters (often on Fox and other R-wing blogs) who prey on their paranoia and lack of rationality, which only makes them worse.

The more they're passed by, the angrier they get. And instead of reflecting on their own ignorance and poor life choices, they've found politicians willing to tell them that it's not actually their fault - that none of this is real, etc. This highly advanced world passing them by? It's all an illusion, and actually THEY'RE the ones who really know what's going on. One step ahead of everyone else. Ignorance is Strength.

It's deliciously and disturbingly ironic that they often quote 1984 when they are QUITE LITERALLY the EXACT kind of people that 1984 was about.
