I'm not saying it's all high art, but I roll my eyes when I hear like "the best video game story is a bad movie"

For example, I feel Guardians of the Galaxy 2021 has better writing than most Marvel or DC movies.

The best movie will be better than the best video game, but I feel there is respectable writing across the video game world.

I would leverage this mostly against JRPGs. Trails of Cold Steel has a fucking gag dub that JRPG diehards think is great because they only ever read the usual schlock of more generic titles.

Red dead redemption 2 was the first video game story to really move me at parts. It still has nothing on a movie or book experience due to excessive bloating, but that's necessary for a video game to be long and worth playing. Great ending though, story wise.

Basically, they're getting closer but I think there's still a ceiling on how good they can be when just looking at them for their story. Luckily, a story is only part of why we play the game

I'd say they're on par with a generic Netflix show but hey people eat that s*** up like crazy

I feel the vast majority of the truly well-written games are such because they're not just trying to ape a movie in the sense of being a linear story with gameplay inserted in between.

Many of the best written stories in games utilize the fact that they're a game and that the player is an interactive force in the game to do things linear storytelling can't do.

Some of my favorite stories are from video games, and the gap between them and my other favorites isn't that big, so being video games isn't really too much of a disadvantage IMO
