Give me text, or at least text and images. I'd rather have that than a video.

I used to print out the FAQs and holepunch them and put them in my 3-ring binder. I had entire FF7 FAQs printed out, etc.

I think with Elden Ring specifically I just need quick clips of a guide rather than a full walk through. I haven't really encountered anything like the tweet describes and googling things (or even just going to the elden ring wiki) have been sufficient for finding what I need pretty quickly.

The old style was cool too though. Any guide with ASCII in it gives me serotonin

Text with supporting videos seems like the best combo. Searchable text is a lot easier than searching through videos. Videos can give a very quick solution for complex sections that would take ten paragraphs of text to properly describe.

That right side snippet is a writing abomination.

The left is lacking that personal touch I appreciated in the good ol' GameFAQs walkthroughs (I'm quite fond of VMerken's No Merchant RE4 guides for his bits of commentary), but is serviceable.

I think they're both fake, the right clearly is given the author's name and the fact that they called it Raya Lucario

The right side is, as I understand it, referring to sites that overfill on SEO language before (or if) getting to the actual content.

I would think the left side is self evident.

They are absolutely both fake. We don't currently have a text guide for Elden Ring.

A lot of modern guides are irritating because they're written like they're 200 small seperate articles.

If I Google Ranni's quest walkthru and the first two paragraphs that show up in a guide outright explain what Elden Ring is and how this is a super difficult quest that everyone struggles with, im heading elsewhere.

The name of the article lists something very specific to that game. I don't need to be eased into it. Cyric doesn't have a multi paragraph explanation of the history of Sega before the combat section and then another before a section on a mini game. That'd be fucking dumb

I find it semi-accurate. When I'm stuck in game and consult Google, all the articles tend to have 4 paragrahps of nonsense, and then post the actual solution in a few lines, lol.

Now that Im not a child who occasionally needs to have his hand held to figure out where to go next in a video game, I find game wikis to be ideal. Im mainly thinking about FromSoft games, where after finishing an area Ill check the wiki to go back and find any secrets I missed.

That's not to even say I'm against that idea, but I'd make it its own section, y'know?

Like heck I set aside a couple sections in the Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise guide to talk about its history.

I've always found that text walkthroughs for some reason are always a lot more comprehensive. That might just be because the people who make them are more thorough than the people who make walkthroughs like the right side though.

Yeah it's an abomination. Those articles like the ones on the right will always appear first on google searches too. Half the time they're not even complete or they're just all copy-pasting the same blocks of text from each other. But it's honestly confusing why they even exist.

I remember googling "Persona 5 accessories" hoping to see a full list of accessory equipment in the game and shitty articles like the right-one appear going through paragraphs of non-detail about what the game is about and then near the bottom of the article show a tiny table of accessories you can buy near the beginning of the game - clearly not having made it very far themselves and just rushing to push out these shitty advice pieces. Like I wonder if the authors of those are deluding even themselves that they're helping anyone or if they're 100% all-in on just trying to be clickbait on the first page of google searches.

Wikis are I guess the best we have now but it's very, very hit-or-miss depending on the game. The FromSoft ones are pretty good though, since we're on that topic.
