I imagine its core plot / theme (a woman waiting to hear the results of a cancer test, and uncertainty in the face of death) would give it broader / more lasting appeal than most New Wave films, since that's something many people today can still relate to perfectly well, sadly. It also uses the French-Algerian war as a backdrop for some of its themes, which if memory serves me correctly was basically to France what the war in Afghanistan was to America. It honestly holds up better than most of the other films of the new wave, and it's probably the easiest one to appreciate and enjoy. --- Welcome to America.
