Use the Music Box in the 2nd half of the fight after he goes beast mode to stun him for free hits

In his first form, Gascoigne is pretty easy to parry (using Blunderbuss) when you aren't spamming R1 or spin-to-win. I play it kinda like Sekiro, actually

First try this morning I dropped him.

I feel like there's not much point in upgrading gun if I'm only using gun to stagger (or get attention).

Pistol stagger and visceral strength is tied to Bloodtinge stat and that's a run you don't want to go with on your first playthrough.

Upgrade it to 6 anyway. Plenty of blood stones to farm just like in Souls.

I think Visceral damage is tied to the Skill stat, it also scales with blood level, but thats your overall stat level, not Bloodtinge specifically.

Visceral is tied to skill, scales with level to a degree (most gains are made early) and is subject to any physical boosts from blood gems as the visceral is treated like a separate weapon

this is why you see sicknasty shenanigans using beast blood pellets

side note, I went with bloodtinge my first run and it was glorious whipping Santas ass with my pimp cane for that sweet kitaner

Got to Vicar Amelia and realizing I might be a bit in over my head at this point because I had barely set foot in Old Yharnam.

Also apparently I'm not in any position to fight Mr. Machine Gun.

I want to give you a tiny hint that will lead you to a new weapon. When you get to the area where you go one of two ways, one leads to a boss and the other leads to a deranged guy firing at you on a rooftop, circle around the building you leave. There is a mob with a giant sack that will grab you and lead you to a new area. At the end of that area is a lightning mace called the Tonitrus.

It's not the best weapon in the game, but its a decent weapon if you align your stats properly.

Early on, everything should go into vigor

And not past 30*ish

No reason to add stamina or strength or skill or arcane until way later imo. Unless you're making a build, but thats gonna be a hindrance for new players. "Everything in HP" is great advice

This indicates a question about how to level up and upgrade

I'd dump all upgrades into your melee weapon and then when you need Twin Bloodstone Shards for the main melee weapon, you can start using those regular Bloodstone Shards for the gun since your main weapon doesn't need them anymore. Once you get gems, Bloodtinge/Arcane/Strength/Skill becomes more important due to the scaling of the gems.

The gun damage also effects whether you can parry attacks in one shot, which is super important. So, if you don't upgrade it at all, eventually you won't be able to parry the later enemies.

Man this game really is shortcut porn. First I get "here's a shortcut to skip the run through the big chapel with all the poisoning beasts", and then not long after that I get, "here's a shortcut to basically skip the entire run through the area up to this point".

Thanks wolf beast who crashed out of that door. You're a pal.

Also I'm getting better at parrying wolf beasts :D

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I'm not entirely sure that's true. But! Thanks for pointing this out either way
https://www.reddit.com/r/bloodborne/comments/31wi5u/comment/cq5mo7v/

I think it's just how it works in the other souls games.
Each weapon as its own use to parry or (some shields in the other games didn't parry, such as the shield bashing ones, think of the flamesprayer and the rosmarious) whatever; but some have longer or shorter windows. Though in this game it's more about the distance you can preform the parry or not (IE: the pistol shot is further than the blunderbus), rather than how long of a window you have, it's how long a distance you have.
I do think some bosses are impossible to parry, in the traditional "shoot them in the animation" way; as many bosses can be hacked at on their knees or head or hands until they are staggered in which a vicious attack can be preformed.
Lots of people also seem to think that the way to parry is during the wind up of an attack, which isn't the case (as it's supposed to be during the actual attack just like parries in the other games) but most people know this one I think.
Also, an upgraded gun (say +6-+10) along with a higher bloodtinge stat can easily cause a hit of 100-200 damage or more (depending on the gun, gems, bone ash, etc) and can be used to stop an enemy from charging you, pulling them away from a group, knocking them over (think of the cannon or if you shoot a dog with this one), and more.
The people that don't "understand" the guns need to (excuse the epik meem) git gud.

The thread goes on to talk about staggering vs successful parrying and breaking limbs/heads of giant monsters.

So....

Yes and no

Ah, but that would suggest stronger guns can cause flinch, not stagger.

That said I see no harm in upgrading the gun if it comes to a point in the game where I'm drowning in shards.

Yeah it's like I know they have a great rep from it and it's not like Elden Ring didn't have shortcuts in the legacy dungeons, but it's one of those things where you really respect when they were making PS3 games and doing this simply for more efficient use of space.

That one can be tough. I was wondering how it would go for you.

Tips its completely optional if you already unlocked Vicar Amelia, who is an easier boss imo. They're both basically just giant versions of Scourge Beast and I don't think you can gun parry either Treat it like Kalameet. Bloodstarved Beast will rush you with a swipe. I dodge through the swipe and peck, then back off. I tend to finish with molotovs and bullets to avoid the poison. Hit & run tactics. Don't get greedy. Patience wins the day here

The thing about helpers, and this is true of every Souls game as I've seen, is that it always makes things a bit more chaotic and less measured. If you're one-on-one with the boss, you've really got the chance to measure their patterns.
