Theyve got a relatively minor role in the grand scheme of things. How come theyre on so much of the merchandise and memorabilia about the film?

Like all the costumes and shit you see usually feature the baseball players even though the main beef is the warriors and the riffs, and even the weirdos in the car.

I think I know why theyre so popular but cant put my finger on it

I'm almost certain that movie was made after people from a parallel dimension where those gangs exist came to our dimension and told their story.

Somewhere there's a world with gangs every few blocks with their own colors and gear and they all war with each other amidst the goings on of a bustling later 20th century America.

My exs dad was actually in that movie.

He was the green tank top gang at the start of the film. They can be seen when Cyrus is shot and they cut to that one warrior looking straight ahead as that other douche says, The Warriors did it!

Because they're the most ridiculous gang, and thus the one everyone remembers.

No, that's actually what NYC was like in the 70s.

Between that and Escape from New York, you get a pretty accurate view of what the city was like. It didn't really clean up until the 90s, around the time Times Square turned into Disneyland.

...also, on the off-chance that anyone doesn't know this, this is what the movie was actually based on:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabasis_(Xenophon)

The Warriors are an allegory for the Greeks, trying to fight their way through strange lands and strange armies to get back home. It's also why the main guy in charge was named Cyrus (and why his death sets the plot in motion).
