Correct

I went there in 2004 and saw my first smart phone. The group I was with had a Japanese guy with us and he had could watch videos on his phone. It was sci fi technology to me

LG actually made the first touchscreen smartphone iirc. Apple definitely deserves credit for the massive popularity, at least in the US.

Smartphones had been around for a long time before Apple and Google got involved.

They were originally an evolution of the PDA. The first thing dubbed the smartphone was the MPX200 by Motorola which had Windows Mobile on it. This was in 2003.

I had been through like a dozen Windows Mobile devices before the first iPhone was released and then the Google G1.

I said touchscreen ones. I don't remember if the original iPhone was touchscreen though

You're talking about the first capacitive touchscreen, which LG did. PDAs had touchscreens and touchscreen smartphones weren't far behind the MPX 200 as the MPX 300 from 2004 was touchscreen. The first iPhone had a touchscreen.
