I'm not such a fan of the direction the characters & artstyle is going ever since Awakening.

I prefer The Blazing Blade (2003), The Sacred Stones (2004) or Path of Radiance (2005) to be honest.

But yeah, the gameplay is very addicting. They're great games.

Genealogy of the Holy War is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time. I loved the story, I loved the sense of scale it gives you with its large maps, and I loved hoarding resources in the first half of the game to make the units you play with in the second half the most OP versions of them that you could possibly make them.

Great turn-based strategy gameplay. And it can be very challenging if you turn on the classic settings like permadeath (character dies in battle, then they're gone for good).

This, plus some of the older games have great stories too. Not so much the newer ones, but those still deliver on the gameplay front most of the time.

We get a lot of FE characters in Smash because initially it was because Samurai is the world's biggest FE fanboy (he hosted an Iwata's Ask for them, and even MCed FE's 25th anniversary concert) who'll use Smash Bros as a platform to support the series. From Corrin's introduction on in Smash 4's DLC, Nintendo's exploiting the precedent he set to pressure him to add more FE characters to the roster. Immediately following Byleth's reveal, he even made sure to release a disclaimer that on his weekly Famitsu column that it wasn't his fault Byleth got in, blame Nintendo.

Since I see other people talking about the main series, I'll mention that I enjoy the mobile game, Fire Emblem Heroes, a lot because the maps are smaller and faster, and more importantly, the unit customization and strategy diversity blow the main series out of the water. Powercreep is still a problem that FEH has been battling over the 5+ years of its lifetime, but they've done quite a bit to give opportunities for a lot of units who are 3+ years old to still be usable. A couple quick videos over the years. One is a PvE map. Other is a mode where you design maps for others to play against. I messed up on some calculations which ended in me taking a unit loss. Last one is a real time PvP mode (not my video)... that most people don't play because you need the latest and greatest skills/weapons/units to compete. Most people play for fun, and not for competition. You probably don't want to compete given the game runs on a predatory gacha monetization model. But it is super fun to see the kind of strategies people whip up. I admit, these videos aren't too good without commentary to explain the effects of what goes on. But bear with me. You may also want to play at x2 speed at times since I had to do calculations at times.
