Most of it is low income local commerce, or people driving 30-40 minutes to work retail at big box stores like Wal-Mart.

I live closer to small towns than I do the city and it's fine, though the city is like 30 minutes away.

Depends on what you consider a small town.

I'm originally from Carbondale and then Urbana, Illinois, and there are plenty that would consider both as small towns if they're from cities or as large cities if from actual small towns. I'm fine with smaller cities like those and of isolated micropolitan towns. Tiny little blink and you miss it farmer towns do nothing for me though, but I'd take a dull hamlet like that over shitty parts of a city any day of the week, though.
