I've never played ANY Persona game. Persona 5 seems like weirdo weeb trash. It's about high school students or something, who go out with girls, and there's also actiony fight bits. People seem to love this game. Why?

personally, it didn't resonate with me.

the pacing was off, and the theme of adults, with their corrupted hearts, messing up society was pretty meh, IMO.

the boring, archaic mechanics also didn't help.

I'm a mega weeb and I don't really get the appeal of Persona

The dialogue is unbearably cringey

I like when Akechi eats the pepper

Story-wise, it appeals to people who like YA dark anime

Gameplay-wise, it has elements of Pokemon and life sims

Hmm... Sunhawk topic... But fuck it, I like talking about Persona, so I'll give a serious answer.

I actually stumbled upon the series in 2007 after I was looking for a new JRPG to play on the PS2. That was just after Persona 4 came out. The characters were relatable to me because, back in 2007, I was 18 and had just finished high school not long before that.

And I loved that it wasn't just a traditional turn based combat JRPG, but it had the whole high school student aspect that you had to balance as well. That made it unique, in that part of the game's difficulty came with learning how to manage your time. Certain things were only available on certain days, or at certain times of the day. So you had to plan things correctly, or you wouldn't have enough days to max everything. And if you didn't give yourself enough time to finish the dungeons, you'd get a game over.

And then there's the Persona system itself. It's almost like a monster catching game. Lots of different Persona's with different strengths and weaknesses. But instead of capturing new ones, you have to fuse your existing Persona to gain new, stronger ones. So it's fun fusing them and seeing what new Persona you get. And fusing them lets them learn moves they normally wouldn't learn. So you get some fun shenanigans depending on how you fuse them.

Those aspects are true for Persona 5 as well. There's just so much to these games and it's a lot of fun. But Persona 4 is actually my favorite, not 5.

I like Persona 4 Golden better, but it's just a fun game with great style. My big complaint is that the pacing in the game is pretty bad in the last half of the game >_> But it's still great

I liked it enough to get the platinum for Royal but I've never played it again

The game is stylish as hell, but doesn't really sacrifice substance. The combat is fun, maybe not the best, but it is top tier. The fusing system is really addicting, even if you don't really need to create perfect personas. The social life sim actually augments your combat abilities so it encourages you to try many different side stories. The long length of the game may be a turn off, but it has great world building and it is sometimes nice to get lost in another world for sometime.

There are big pacing issues near the middle of the game, but the intro dungeon and related story is one of the best opening act hooks for a game ever. I think in general it is better for a game to have a great intro and ending instead of a the middle being the high point. Persona 5's intro is one of the best, and the original ending to the game is very good. Royal's epilogue chapter knocks it out of the park and it might even be better that the first act of the game.

that series really hit different when I was depressed, lonely as fuck and missing high school. without that lens I can see it being pretty meh.
