How do you like DEM apples?

Even the (relatively) weak worlds are fine. Dire Dire Docks, Tiny Huge Island, Snow Man's Land. The rest are basically good, great, or amazing. Look how brilliant TTC is. Or SSL. Also, Banjo-Kazooie has no bad worlds at all. DK64 has some dull worlds.

Hazy Maze Cave, Wet-Dry World, Tall, Tall Mountain, Rainbow Ride are my least favorites. Hazy Maze Cave is just lacking on aesthetics, and the rest mentioned are just kind of bland and annoying.

I can never tell if people praising Mario 64 so much is a meme or rose tinted glasses on steroids.

The game is a mess by basic modern standards. Awful camera, choppy levels, completely broken mechanics, compressed sound. There is no difficulty curve, every level is just random, frequently loading screens.

If you do ever die it feels like the game did something goofy like spin the camera around for no reason rather than you fucking up.

Compared to other 3D platformers it just has poor design. Hence why Speedrunners have broken the game so badly.

Easy question to prove it: If Super Mario 64 was released tomorrow would it be popular and sell well?

No it wouldn't.

If Sonic 3 or Deus Ex was released for the first time tomorrow, people would still love it.

Deus Ex "aged poorly" by graphics and GUI design but it's such a good game it still holds up.

Gloomy Gallon isn't much fun. Creepy Castle is pretty bad.

DK64 is a strange game. There's TONS of content, and the dynamic lighting was excellent for 1999, and the music is very good, but the game design is so weird. All the mini-games, the way you have to unlock a few characters before you can do much, the filler content, and the bland hub world. It's funny that the same company made this as Banjo-Kazooie.

Rare in general had this problem where the size and scope of their games kept increasing, but they could never really figure out how to manage the larger worlds.

it all came to a head with "Banjo-Threeie" and they were like "what the fuck do we do when the worlds are this huge" and it resulted in Nuts and Bolts lol

Rainbow Ride is a dumpster fire, and Whomp's Fortress, Cool Cool Mountain, and Tall Tall Mountain are pretty meh too. Shifting Sand Land and Lethal Lava Land are both tedious though easily cheesed through blue shells. The rest are IMO decent to amazing, but that's still 6/15 that aren't fun to play.

Not going to comment on DK64, been too long since I played it to remember all the stages.
