I need to like Tenshi no Uta? Or Shin Seikoku: La Wares? I may have finished them, but if liking them is what it takes to be a fan, I'm out. Mystic Quest is an absolute masterpiece in comparison.

Mystic Quest was a banger compared to some jrpgs I've played. It gets a bad rap because it is fairly simple, but the sound effects were great and the enemy sprites changing depending on how much health they had left was brilliant.

I tried very very hard to like Phantasy Star 2, but it somehow feels more outdated than its predecessor lol.

Like Jesus Christ I love a good, grindy dungeon that takes multiple attempts. But when it's so long and tedious that you're running into the "powered up recolors" of enemies you fought on the first floor maybe it's time to dial it back a bit.

And it's stretched so far that so many games are considered JRPGs, even if they're primarily something else. Like how in the West, Fire Emblem's called a JRPG series before anything else. But in Japan, Fire Emblem's called a Simulation/Strategy series before anything else. Or how there's no debate on Monster Hunter being an RPG series in Japan: it's an action series. Because that more accurately tells you what you're getting.
At least when someone tells me they like WRPGs, I mostly know what they're talking about because WRPG tends to be fairly selective in what is and isn't included. But if they tell me "I like JRPGs", they may as well be saying "I like video games."

Even worse if they just say "I like RPGs". ARPG, SRPG, JRPG, WRPG--it's like the entire gaming library with some blatant exceptions

Honestly the whole RPG label's just screwed at this point :/ At least it means something in the Eastern countries with them being more selective about what's included..

Mystic Quest was pretty good for what it was. Colorful graphics, fun characters, simple story (not always a bad thing) gameplay was good, music was aces, combat wasn't bad and it was neat how the enemies deteriorated as they took more damage. I think ppl get upset because it was advertised as beginner rpg (?)..... in the future people just found it an easy target. Like how people erroneously thought Secret of Evermore was why Secret of Mana 2 never came out.

I think Secret of Stars is probably shit now but back then I was willing to give it more a chance as the two different party system was different at the time, and I would try to play any rpg, but it's just comes off as so dull looking and boring in general now.
