Avatar 2 is at least 10 years too late. The fact Disney gambled and invested as much as they did into that franchise is rather questionable, but Im interested to see how it plays out. I like James Cameron but he is a lot older now.

"its" is possessive, "it's" is not

its goes with his and her(s), none of which have apostrophes

"It's" means "it is"...and that's all. Usually "its" is the version you want. Commonly done wrong.

Avatar 2...I dunno. It's not as if it interests me less than anything else getting made around now. But I wouldn't say I'm excited.

Exactly. All you have to do is read out what you're saying and if "it is" doesn't sound right in that spot, then you should not be using an apostrophe. This is actually one of the simpler things in English grammar that people fuck up a lot.

Affect = verb
Effect = noun

This isn't always true but it has worked out for me so far

As for Avatar 2, I have no interest. It's basically Pocahontas.

Especially if you want to effect a positive affect.

Trying to effect a positive affect will affect the effect you have on people. Effectively.

Affect is also a psychological term that refers to emotions. Which is where we get words like affection and affectation (and Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Technically speaking, "affect" and "effect" come from different Latin roots. In the original context, "effect" came from a base that meant "doing" while "affect" is more along the lines of "showing". But they sound alike in English so we've spent hundreds of years blurring the two together until the distinction is almost meaningless.

As a rule of thumb, effect is used waaaaaay more often than affect, but if you want to avoid the issue altogether, both words have synonyms you can use instead:
Affect: Influence, have an effect on, sway, modify, alter, touch, stir.
Effect: Result, consequence, outcome, reaction, ramifications.

Affect
  • How do cigarettes affect my brain?
  • Age-related changes can affect how you respond or react to medicines.
  • Throughout the performance, a number of audience members were visibly affected.
Effect
  • Global warming is projected to have a number of effects on the ocean.
  • He resigned with immediate effect.
  • A good diet had a positive effect on their health.
  • What are the effects of smoking on the lungs?

I often use the word impact instead; it usually fits.
