They definitely don't have the same mechanism as mammals, for sure. I think some can display traits that people take for affection, but I imagine it's more developing familiarity. I doubt there's a reptile in existence that would feel sad if you never returned. They're not stupid, but they just didn't evolve to need such traits. ... Copied to Clipboard!

They can definitely recognize their owners and feel comfortable around them. Some species are smarter than others. My blue tongue skink chases me around when I put him on the floor sometimes, but that's probably because I target train him with a cat toy. My garter snake would come out of her hide and make eye contact with me, again probably because she associated me with getting fed. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Maybe a Tortoise. I have a coworker who has an African one and it can recognize it's name and it likes being petted. I would get one but you have to assume it will outlive you. You also need to make sure it has an outdoor enclosure that they can't dig under. ... Copied to Clipboard!
