I've been seeing this take a lot recently. And by recently, I mean the past month or so. Jokes about it all over Twitter and Reddit.

What exactly started this? Some major documentary or something?

People are just now going back and watching The Legend of Drunken Master

I started the joke

The British stole the artifacts.

I think it has something to do with them forcefully colonizing other nations and taking things of historical significance

The British stealing national treasures at any geographical location they claimed overship of.

The British Museum is foundationally built on wealth, iconography, artefacts, and history outright stolen from across the globe. It is always worthwhile to disparage them for that.

I think the part where they sent looters over with military makes it obviously bad.

I went there on my Criminology course abroad to do a paper on how legality can change over time. Like how things could not be seen as theft during colonialism is different now.

But I do have to say, it is still the most impressive history museum I've ever been to regardless.

New Indiana Jones movie is coming out

I've been seeing it for years.

And they aren't exactly wrong. Many of the countries wanting their relics back aren't "war torn/unstable countries" so no danger of them being destroyed/lost if returned.

Just the other day I saw in the news that the Greek government was in preliminary talks with the British Museum to grovel and beg them to return the fresco from the walls of the Parthenon.

This is a misconception. For example one time a British diplomat to the Ottoman Empire diplomat received permission from the Sultan to go with some of his guys go to Greece, which the Ottoman Turks owned at that time to examine some artifacts.

So he got there and started making drawings and casts of the artifacts but instead he decided to tell the local Turks that he had permission to just take the stuff home. He sounded convincing so they let him take as much as he wanted.

And that's the story of the Elgin marbles. One of the greatest exhibits at the British Museum.

The British had no authority over Greece at the time they just had the power of self importance and the ability to use that power to bullshit people into believing you have the authority to do whatever you want.

memes aside, I'd love to see an objective analysis of what percentage of stolen goods would have been lost or destroyed by now if they had been handed over to their host country and left it up to them to preserve it.

The British went all over the world for spice and decided they didnt want to use any in their meals.

My favorite part of that ep of LWT was the museum representative who admitted that if they returned everything that was stolen the museum would be empty.
