I started with the first MGS when I was about 13, but I didn't really get into gaming until I was 18 (and I was probably in my 20s when I first got a PS2), so by the time I played MGS2, I was already aware of Raiden.

As someone who is about to finish ME1 for the first time, it's so underwhelming.
The mako segments are garbage, the talents are fine but uninteresting, the exploration is tedious and boring (random planet search then mako trash), the team mate interaction is almost nil, and the "branching paths" thing hasn't really had any significance.
Nor have any decisions I've made all game.

I don't understand the weird pedestal ME1 has been put on, do maybe I'll feel different after i start ME2.

Ok. I just did that recently. It's not whack.

Mass Effect 1 is slow, it combat is significantly worse, half the crew has barely any dialogue, the ones who do are by far the most boring crewmates (except wrex), the mako is trash, most of the side areas use identical environments/interiors, Saren is the most bland villain in the series, enemies are boring bullet sponges, and the Citadel earned the game's M rating by being an incredibly graphic depiction of hell.

I'm roughly around halfway through, and it hasn't really grabbed me like the first game did. It has less RPG elements, and most of the main quests are just related to gathering your squad.

ME1 could use for a drastic revamp I'll give you that. It's definitely a product of it's time. I've always stated that if ME1 can get a revamp in ME3 style it would easily be the best of the saga undisputed. Storytelling is the best in the series.

ME2 is easier to play and you'll enjoy more from a gameplay perspective. However, as a game it fall flat and is way more over hyped than ME1 is imo. The game is just "go here, do that. Go there, do that." If doing a bunch of fetch quests is your thing then you'll love it.

However, I found myself wanting to get it over with after about an hour of playing it because it's more or less the same thing over and over and over.

No matter how much people give shit for 3, it's really where the series shinies from a modern perspective and storytelling prospective. The only real hate people had for ME3 was the ending and I never experienced the initial ending as I played the game after the patch for the "fixed" ending. I didn't it find it that disappointing as a result, but admittedly I probably would have if not for the patch.
And I had hella fun playing ME3 multiplayer back then.

ME3 took the best of 1 and 2 and made them better. However, I still think ME1 is the best the series had to offer even with it's issues.

Xenoblade Chronicles (numbered mainline games only) 1 > 3 > 2

Love all 3 games though.

In terms of the first 3 games however: 1 > X > 2

How is that different from 1?
The very first major mission you get is "pick one of three planets and do the linear mission."
When you get to the second planet, lots of assets and environments are reused.
Side missions are almost entirely copy and pasted (both in structure and visually).

Don't get me wrong, I've had fun with the game, and the story is cool. Almost every criticism you listed for 2 very clearly applies to 1 though.

Not to be dismissive, but it feels a little rose-tinted-glassesy.
The first game is super duper short, and they use very little of that time to flesh anything out in any worthwhile way.

Go here to confront the Matron.
Go here and get information on Saren.

I'm not sure that I will feel any differently after starting 2.
1 is already really underwhelming, regardless of its technical limitations. I can't see 2 being a downgrade in any way when 1 did really nothing special.

Reviews back up my examples. Iron Man 2 is easily worse than 3. 3 has a great Shane Black script.

Back to the Future 2 is the only bad-to-average film of the trilogy. It retreads too much of the first film. The Wild West setting of 3 was a great way to spice things up.

The main thing I remember from playing through MGS2 was finally thinking "Can we stop fucking talking about 'the Patriots' for 30 minutes so I can fight this giant metal nuclear water dinosaur, please!?"

I was one of the ones licking my chops for that game, played the demo and all that stuff, and all the talky talky wordy talky just killed my enthusiasm for it. That was the last MGS game I ever played.
