Remember how in those old TV shows (like, maybe 60's and before), a standard plot was the boss coming over for dinner?

Was that actually a common thing and if so, why don't we do it anymore? Not that I want to, I'm just curious.

Question answered

I don't think people wanted to even back then. Hell, the plot was usually how stressed out the man would be.

It seems to just be a custom.

A custom the people stopped because nobody wanted to do it.

No idea but I'd guess the rules for getting into your bosses good graces were really loose at that time. Now that would be weird.

I've had dinners with my bosses a few times but they always got the bill.

The one comment that points out that just having people over for dinner in general was way more common as well also has a good point.

Ya it's a interesting topic, the work environment has gotten really weird.

We recently had a survey about our company and industry and some of the results showed that our work relationships are purely work related. In the last 6 years or so I recall just a few casual conversations with my colleagues. It's like you really have to try now.

One of the questions was do you feel you can be yourself at work...which we scored lower than expected which kinda puzzled our boss. Of course the only person to speak about it mentioned wokeness and torpedoed the whole conversation...

I'd quit my job before I let my boss into my house. She would find a way to use something about it to insult me with at work.

Yeah I would much rather have my work and home separate as well. It baffles me that people didn't have a barrier between the two back then.

You had no reason to, really, especially considering how much more slack being a full-time employee was.

It's worth mentioning that you and your boss were much more likely to be of similar socio-economic class back then.

It seemed like the idea was to get your bosses' good graces in hopes of a promotion. From what my family members say having people over for dinner was a major means of socializing back in the day as well

Also, I think there's something to be said about the fact that back when this was common, the man's wife would more than likely be at home for the majority of the day and preparing/making the dinner herself, rather than also being at work.

Coupled with the fact that peacing out from your (legitimate) 8-4/9-5 job early wasn't uncommon, and thus dinner could be earlier, combined with everything else it's no wonder this and having family friends over died off.

I remember like 15 years ago it was normal to hang out with people at work. Now at my new job which is first one in the COVID era it barely happens. But it could just be no one wants to hang out with me lol.

I dont know if it was ever actually a thing. Seems like the kind of Asked out two girls on the same night and tried to go on both dates that only happens in sitcoms as an excuse for shenanigans.

If it ever did happen, it was presumably during a time when people felt valued by and socially connected to their boss, which is not now.

Regular employees should not be treating their rich bosses to anything. The opposite is fine though.

I stopped watching FG when it went off the air the first time, so either didn't see that one, or I forgot about it.

I actually did this irl. I had two dates to my grandfather's funeral and then we went to super awkward dinner. It was less shenanigans and more super tense

Probably because restaurants and catering services replaced having a homemade meal with someone you don't have a good friendship with.

Also, the dynamic kinda changed to rich people only having dinner with other rich people for unsavory reasons.
