Current Events > i bought an rtx 3080. power cable/PCIE question?

So with my old gpu (gtx 1080) i only use 1 pcir cable that those brances (like 3+1 cable that branch into 3+1) cable connected to a single slot in the psu into the graphic card.

With 3080, i heard you need 2 different cables cables connected to the psu and put each 3+1 pins into the gpu for each cable instead of using the "branch"?

Im not sure about the 3080, but with my 4080 the recommendation was 3 separate cables into the PSU, but mine is working off 2 separate cables and one cable splits in a y shape to plug thrice into the GPU. (Like imagine the cables as: Y I)

i dont have experience with the 3080 but its possible it could work with a single cable, but it would be dependent on the cable, the PSU, and maybe even what port on the PSU in specific in some cases

it could also be that my setup is completely wrong and once my GPU draws enough power it craps out and my computer BSODs or something but so far it hasnt happened

Holy crap. I had not realized I had been riding dirty for like 3-4 months. I kinda panicked but I added in a separate pic power cable for my 3080 because of this. Got everything set and testedand then my GPU fan sounded weird on the reboot! Luckily it was just a stray wire that was hitting it and I needed to get it out of the way.

This is a long way to sayThank you! This could have caused problems down the road!!

I highly recommend you buy a new PSU with your GPU. If you PSU fucks up, your whole system can go with it.

It's crazy to think that now, with 3090s and up, you need 1600w psu just to maintain voltage. This is why California can't keep it's electric grids active, because too many gaming pals are triple dlss'ng interactive fantasies and vr porn.

The power usage for anything above 3080 ti is insane that's why i just settle for the 3080. Not to mention the prices are highway robbery
