Now that I own a house I need to make it so that if I died tomorrow my boyfriend wouldn't be evicted from his place of residence

Literally once you die it's not your problem anymore, why do this to yourself

My cat gets my meat and my dog gets my bones, the roaches can have all my belongings

How will the roaches know the division of your belongings? You want your roaches to fight after your death? That's not very fetch

Roaches live in a post-nationalist commune, they have no concept of war or ownership. They break bread with brother, cousin and stranger alike, and while you sleep they lay eggs in your mouth.

What annoys me is that - for some reason - I can't download a will template, write something ("I leave everything to my wife...or kids equally if we both die"), get it notarized, and file it somewhere. It seems as if it's impossible to do without paying a lawyer an absolute minimum of $500 to do...nothing in particular.

I had a father-in-law die and it cost $500 or somesuch to go to probate court to get his assets split evenly between three kids. He had no will.

My mother-in-law died and she had a will...and it cost $500 or somesuch to go to probate court to get it executed.

Long story short wills are scams that exist to give money to lawyers unless there's no obvious next of kin or other family disagreement...at least so far as I can tell.

I'm pretty sure you can do it yourself? And file it? Just the way you want to?

Maybe it's state specific though.

I dunno, I went to a site like that a few years ago and tried to do it and there was a $500 charge involved to file it through the appropriate lawyer or something at the end of it anyways. Maybe a state thing...or maybe I looked at the wrong sites.

Yeah because if you just look up the required language you can draft it and file it yourself. But there are filing fees and court charges still so it's not free.

Right...but I still say it's exploitative. Why should it cost hundreds of dollars (and a court action) to file a document? I don't believe they review it in any substantive way other than checking the notary stamp (i.e. sealed wills are a thing) and it requires a court action to process it after opening anyways.

Oh well.

Oh well.

Because our court system fucking sucks and is not very accessible to people who aren't wealthy

Because it doesn't hurt to be prepared. What if I get hit by a drunk driver and die next week? How will anyone know what I want done with my stuff and money?

I am a conscientious objector to giving lawyers unearned money. That probably means I'll never accomplish anything significant, but I feel better.
