So over the past year, Woolie and Reggie have been playing the three Mass Effect games, usually with some mods in place. They have a person they know, DatAsuna, who was putting together mods to make the experience go easy given the whole series is still a bit busted, even on Legendary Edition.

Anyway, since Woolie had only played ME1, he handed the controller over to Reggie so he could play through it. Reggie made his character "Red Shepard" MaleShep. Nothing in particular to do with the Par/Ren system, he just liked the name.

Once they hit ME2, Woolie took the controller back so he could finish the series. With some mod hijinx, Woolie was able to play as "Blue Shepard". Basically the character did all the same things Red Shepard did, but was FemShep.

When they finally got to ME3, Woolie passed the controller back to Reggie to end the saga of "Red Shepard". Basically there was no "reason" why the gender swap partway through and then back, narratively. It was just the way each wanted to play. Red picked back up where Blue left off, same decisions and all.

And then we get to the Citadel DLC.

Something I never even knew is that both Meer and Hale recorded lines for an enemy FemShep and MaleShep.

So it doesn't "quite" work out but if you use your imagination a bit, you can see it as Red Shepard literally fighting Blue Shepard throughout the DLC. Just a nice little cap on the series (before sinking into the mire that is the ME3 ending).
