Careful with that one. If it's AssTank he closes the topic just so he has more time to go through it and mark each and every single offending post and make notes, regardless of who it was that created the topic.

I just caught up on that thread and yeah it would have made a lot more sense to mod the one dude stirring shit than to close the topic

If he made his account post 2016 and immediately started shitposting on GameFAQs, I'd consider it evidence, yeah. Obviously it's not every user with 88 in their name, but there certainly have been some.

You don't need to keep a spreadsheet, you just need contextual reading skills and pattern recognition.
That 50 karma account who ignores every valid argument against him and only responds to posts that agree with him? That's a troll.
I posted a 1000+ word story from reddit in a smug attempt to make a point about something. The post started with "I'm a 61 male." It was a complete non sequitur in a 200 post topic. Multiple 261 users still responded seriously while completely missing the point of the post.

Just ask yourself, "Why is this user posting in this (bizarre) way? What's his goal?" Usually that question will give you a lot of answers.

As for #2, I think CE is pretty good at just calling trolls for what they are. You can't stop trolls from posting, but you can call them out on their BS. That means NOT making a 10 page dissertation on why their shitty beliefs are wrong, but INSTEAD calling out their shitty posting strategy. Can't say every thread goes well, but you don't see people seriously arguing with Bluets on here.

Well, I will say that is a shame. And yeah I don't think it's hard to identify them either, personally. There were definitely threads on 261 where they would spend tons of posts arguing with trolls, though I often saw it justified as exposing them and the truth for viewers to see how ridiculous they are and eventually it was used as a form of entrapment because if you just keep asking them to clarify and definite exactly what they're talking about, eventually they'd get to the point of just openly moddable posts and then that would be the result.

I scorn trolls so I tend to just ignore their existence when I can. My point was that there's regulars here that not everybody recognizes by name as a troll or shitposter. Like, I briefly took Fluttershy seriously in a thread, but it was only for one post and then their unhinged responses afterwards just exposed them for what they are.

Well, you have been here longer so no doubt have a truer view on the regular habits of the board, I was just pointing out that in the short amount of time I've been here I've seen them still addressing and conversing with them, even if it's in a mocking or derisive manner. They thrive on contempt and disdain, the way to starve them is by not responding to them at all.
