There hasn't been a third one yet. The mobile phone games don't count as mainline entries.

NNK2 gets rid of the fun Pokemon aspects, though, so that was an immediate turn-off for me. It almost feels like an entry in a different series, haha.

I bought Ni No Kuni 2 because it was supposed to be one absolut great JRPG in a huge pile of all JRPGs, but... I could not get into it.

It was much more childish than I expected, and in the end it was simply too much for me.

It's dialog heavy, and they really hit the mark with their "talk to me as if I were 5 year old" stuff.

I'm still sure that it's a great game, but every time they explained what just happend on the screen with 10 long sentences, suitable for pre-schoolers my brain became more mushy

I had the same reaction. I hated the 8 year old voiceover saying, happily ever after over and over. I couldnt stand Evan the boy/kitty king.

Then, around the 4th attempt, it stuck. I was able to get beyond the saccharine and found it was actually pretty fun. Wound up getting the plat and everything. Its one of the prettiest of the modern JRPGs and mostly a little too easy..until later when bosses all of a sudden get much harder.

Yea, I couldn't get far into ni no Kuni 2. The gameplay, character's, world and story just didn't grap me like the original did.

The devs certainly did try but it felt like they just didn't understand the original. A lighthearted game vs a kids game best describes the two.

Also the isekai element was kind of weird. With the MC seemingly dying, along with his world, ends up somewhere else...adapts almost immediately, accepts his new odd circumstances and just goes with the flow to help a kid he barely knows caught in a huge conflict he barely understands nor has any real attachment towards.

So why would the player?

I would not say it that hard or negativly.

It just feels like some "My first JRPG", be it positive or negative.

If someone would ask me "hey, my younger child wants to play something on the playstation like their big brother", Ni No Kuni 2 is probably one of the first games that would come into mind.

It actually has a Pegi 12 raiting, but I honestly think this is too high, even if there is some weapon and fantasy violence.

And a 12 year old wont give a F about plot holes or lose circumstances.

if by 3 you mean 2

the story beats have no meat. you get in, get out, move on, who gives a shit. and it's way too easy, without difficulty settings at launch iirc. it really needed harder modes.

The big bad guy you're chasing the whole time ending up being a straight up Green Roland was hilarious though. A retread of the first game that was obviously coming, yet still handled in the clumsiest way was a laugh out loud moment.
