Your Preference?

Over the last decade or so, it seems people's opinions of EarthBound have only gone up. I thought SMRPG was gradually being forgotten, but the response to the remake shows otherwise. I know people might be a bit high on SMRPG right now, so it might not be the most fair time to do this.

In terms of fun character stuff and charm I'd say they're on a similar level. Earthbound also has a deeper side to it, both in terms of clever references and serious character stuff, that SMRPG doesn't go into. However, SMRPG is by far the superior game experience.

They are different flavors of good. One is your standard fruit jelly of decent quality you'd put on a piece of toast and enjoy whenever, because it's easier to find it some pleasures do not need to be deeper than that. The other is a now-discontinued brand of rich-flavored preserves you would order online, because no stores near you ever carry it (for reasons), pay two or three times as much than the standard, and put it in your baked goods that call for a fruit spread because you want to make a damned good impression when you share that treat with people; bonus points that the fruit is obscure and not found in store brands.

It's perfectly OK to love both. Most people will have heard of one, and it looks like yet more of it is being made. The latter didn't get enough love from the company in charge of its production and distribution, so we're sadly getting no more of it.

(I may or may not be sore about something I just discovered today)

I guess Super Mario RPG. Both had their flaws.

The creator said the Mother story was complete which is why it wasn't getting more. It has nothing to do with money.

Who said anything about it being because of the money? Are you misinterpreting things?

Don't make me choose.

Of the two I will say I'd rather replay SMRPG, since it's less of an endeavor.

I played both for the first time a few years ago.

I thought Earthbound lived up to the hype and Mario rpg didn't.

So easy win for Earthbound

Earthbound. It goes along at a better pace, and doesn't feel as tedious to level as Seven Stars. It's also quirky and has lots of memorable locals, moments, and music.

I like the writing and humor in Earthbound more but the gameplay in SMRPG more, so I'd say SMRPG overall. Both have great soundtracks. Mother 3 is a tougher choice, though
