Togetherness peaked around WW2. Since then the things that used to pull people together (national/civic pride, religion, post-Depression inter-reliance, etc) have been fading quickly.

Definitely not just young people.

This.

People really haven't changed that much for thousands of years. Your perception of people has changed.

That's where i waiver a lot. Especially when people say "times were different back then" but then feels like people would take up wife beating and slavery in a heart beat if legally allowed.
People suck and destroy (at least they could swallow but they don't even do that)

People always have the same impulses to be selfish, overlook cruelty, etc. The difference between eras is, in large part, related to how strong societal goals/morals/expectations are. The further we slide from the "hurray for the US and greater West" WW2 era (and, yes, the further we slide from religion) the weaker and weaker our societal framework is becoming.

WW2 norms/religion were far perfect, of course: MAGA folks keep trying to bring back some of the worst prejudices/etc from that era. But the reason liberals continue to struggle vs MAGA is that liberals can't present a good alternative. If we can't be proud to be American citizens and we don't share many religious or cultural beliefs...what exactly DO we share? Why are we in a country together? What ARE we proud of? "Tolerance of differences" can, of course, only go so far as a unifying factor.

I'm certainly not saying MAGA is right (and I vote Democratic 100% of the time now) but it's necessary to have a strong answer to that question if we want to save the country from selfishness.

I never understand this observation, since I don't find this attitude consistent in young adults, nor do I find that other generations aren't prone to such attitudes.

Yeah but king of the Hill is genius. It just keeps getting better with age, especially when things seem to head backwards.

think young adults are just way better at being visible about it, makes it easier to push all the blame on them.
