For sure. That's why I'm not really trying to get into all the details until the trials start. I care about the outcome not the investigation at this point.

My main complaint about all of this is that the stupid document and other lawsuits came up first, fired up Trump's base, made him a shoo-in for the nomination, and now the REAL legal issue - trying to blatantly steal votes and cheat his way to the Presidency - feels like minor news.

Yes, yes, Trump was wrong about the documents and frankly everything else he's charged with. But the realpolitik of the situation is that anyone wanting to beat him (which should be the country given the treason) should focus on the big issue: namely that if he is allowed to compete again and wins...it's not unrealistic to say democracy might end. Documents (or hookers, or anything else ugly he's done) aren't going to take him down. Either we are a country that is OK discarding democracy or we aren't (I really hope the latter) - anyone at all on the fence about voting for him needs that choice shoved in their face.

The media/Democrats/everyone needs to focus on the Georgia/Jan 6th issues and stop yelling about the other distractions. And it's FINALLY here!

I doubt you can ever achieve a conviction. You need 100% of the jurors votes, so, one measly Trump voter can throw everything to chaos & nearly 50% of the nation voted for Trump, so good luck with that. It's a hail Mary, but more than likely the fight will be decided in the ballot box. Beat him in the election and he will be finished for good, but he is a tough opponent, so it will definitely not be easy, but I suppose that is the best way to solve it. If he loses a second time, you can say that America has fully rejected him & his career as a politician will wither to oblivion as he lost the mandate of heaven.

Outside of the mandate of heaven line which I thought sounded cool at the time, it is pretty simple: the legal system won't beat Trump, so democratic system will have to pick up the slack

Except for the part where he's spent the last eight years convincing as many people as possible that the only way he could possibly lose an election is if the opponent cheated, and as such a dangerously large number of people genuinely believe (in spite of the complete lack of evidence to support it and a substantial amount of evidence that pro-GOP fraud happened) that the Democrats stole the last election. If he loses again, those people aren't going to see that as a failure on Trump's part, they're going to see it as another instance of the Democrats undermining democracy to take away the government that America really wants, and that's just going to make them even angrier.

Watergate took over two years from break-in to conclusion of investigation as well. This timeline isn't that unusual.

Real talk, if you're going to go after someone as powerful and influential as Trump, you better fucking make sure you have all your i's dotted and t's crossed. You get exactly one shot at it, so don't fucking miss.

Yeah, it's frustrating that it's been two years since he incited insurrection and no charges have been filed until now, but how much worse would it have been if some trigger-happy prosecutor filed charges straight away, only for them to get tossed because they couldn't put forward the best possible case in that short of a timeframe?

The dude will be pushing into his 80s and keeps losing, so what are they going to do after a certain point? They had Covid to blame for his loss in 2020, but what would they have for an excuse this time? I would be surprised if Trump can effectively run again if he loses a second time. It is now or never for him

They'd have the "deep state" and transgenders to blame, for example. Probably more, all nonsensical and lacking in any responsibility.

They didn't blame Covid. They blamed the Democrats for stealing the election, a narrative which they continue to push and will continue to cling to if he loses again. That's why Jan 6th happened, and I'm fully expecting something similar to happen if anything happens to stop Trump from taking office (whether it's losing the election or being convicted).

I still dont understand how if he goes to prison, he can still run for president.

I mean fuck me if you have a criminal record you struggle to become a police officer or a lawyer but running the country is fair game? Like he could even run for president from jail?

Something is kind of wrong with that?

We need to add a few more rules and conditions for running.

Nobody thought to add such simple restrictions such as you cant run if youve been convicted of a crime? Prisoners lose the right to vote but they can run for president, why is this a thing?

At some level, I can kind of understand it, the same way that I can kind of understand pushing for felons to be able to vote. If being convicted of a crime prevents somebody from holding office, all a political rival has to do to eliminate their competition is ensure that they're convicted of a crime, and that's not actually that hard to do if they set the bar low enough. Odds are most people could be successfully convicted of piracy these days for having watched copyrighted material on Youtube, and if that's not enough, there's also the option of framing them or just outright bribing a handful of sufficiently corrupt officials to apply a conviction with a relatively low burden of proof. Push comes to shove, the existing government is the one who decides what's illegal: change some laws, and their rival is no longer law-abiding.

On the flip side, of course, not barring convicts from being president carries all sorts of extremely obvious problems behind it, but I'm not sure how to mitigate that without opening the door to abuse. Granted, that abuse can just as easily be replaced by hiring a hitman to kill the rival regardless of what the law says, and it's not like other countries haven't figured out how to have it be illegal for criminals to take office, so there's a good chance this is just paranoia over a remote possibility getting in the way of sensible policy (though that's par for the course for the US).

I'd adjust the whole thing to be about high crimes, such as treason or sedition, rather than petty, common violations like stealing an apple or jaywalking. If someone is responsible for trying to topple the government in a hostile manner, there is a good chance they should not be allowed to run said government.
