Seems fun. Last one I played was Vesperis but I barely got far in it.

It's honestly pretty good, combat system is fun. Story is a little predictable. But, if you didn't care much for Vesperia it's kinda more of the same here.

I found it to be a decent Tales game. Mind you I feel like it doesn't really pick up until halfway through. Side note, Ys 9 still at near full price.... don't know why its still that heavy of a price.

so long as you pay 40 buck or less, you are good.

arise has weak bosses and last 1/3 of the game, but is solid otherwise

why ya stop playing vesperia?

Yeah, if you like action rpgs, I feel it's worth it. It was a solid 7 or 8 for me. Not perfect, but I still felt like I got my $60 worth from it. And to me it has a much better combat system than that godawful soul gauge system in Tales of Berseria.

Vesperia and Berseria are for $10 each, should I get them too? Would it feel bad to play them after Arise?

I love Tales series but havent played so many.

Maybe. I never finished it because of the design. The beginning is very rough, and there is a lot of flawed design in it despite the fact that the engine itself and combat should be good.

Everyone has differing opinions on these games as you can see, but yeah, worth $10.

Just be warned that Berseria has a different battle system compared to most in the series. You're not going to be able to approach the combat in the same way that you do in Arise and Vesperia. Berseria does have a good story though

Yes just get them all.

.....well personally I can't stand zestiria, but its possible you might like it. If its cheap as hell might as well.

EDIT: Ah shit zestiria is 59.99 oh fuck no, lmfao. Thought it'd be like 5 dollars since vesperia and berseria is 10 bucks. Personally vesperia is my favorite out of all the tales of games available on the PS4/PS5 and all around this one is the most "complete package" when it comes to various aspects a tales of game should have. (ton of side-content, ton of outfits to mess around with, replayability, 9 characters for more gameplay options, that kind of thing).

Velvet's one of the most busted PCs in the franchise (Rita might be better late game though) largely because she just breaks damn near every rule about Berseria's combat system.

berseria is far better than arise thoe it does have a bit of a steep learning curve once you get the hang of it you will have a blast

A lot of tales of games actually changes up their combat systems a bit, so two tales of games having the exact same type of system is extremely rare. (Tales of xillia 1 and tales of xillia 2 share the same battle system at a base level, but this is more the exception than the rule. Xillia 2 is a direct sequel).

Like back in 2001 with the PS1's tales of destiny 2 (actually tales of eternia, which you can get on the psp if you are in EU), the battle system took place on a 2D plane and I always used to say it felt like playing a fighting game when you got in battles. Especially once you got this combo command accesory and it turned all of your special moves into motion commands, like one move would be the hadoken motion, another the dragon punch motion and so on.

Tales of symphonia first released on a gamecube had battles that take place in a 3D arena, but you still moved on a 2D plane. You had your basic attack button that can put out 2, 3, or 4 hit combo strings depending on the character you are using. Your special moves is called artes, and you would put them on the artes button for 4 different attacks. Hold up for one attack, hold down for another, hold left/right for the 3rd, and stand still and press the button for the 4th. Tales of legendia on PS2, tales of the abyss on the PS2/3DS, and tales of vesperia on the PS4/switch,xbox/PC plays like this on a basic level. *There is major differences with the combat system beyond this but this can be figured out playing each different game*

Also tales of the abyss, vesperia, tales of xillia etc. has this free run function where you can move around the field.

Tales of graces f on the PS3, tales of zestira, and tales of berseria at a basic level has this artes tree type of system where different special moves come out depending on what order they are in with your artes list. (graces f and zestiria has a set order, but berseria is actually customizable with this part).

With tales of arise, you freely move around the arena like most action rpgs you can think of today, and it has a jump button/jump function put into the battle system (tales of graces f, zestiria and berseria you cannot jump in these games). Your special moves are put on the triangle, circle, and R1 buttons....or whatever is the equivalent on the xbox/PC. You have your basic standard attacks on square. You have your lock-on and so on.

.....I just realized I typed all of this and you were mainly asking about berseria. Fuck. I am too invested in the post to delete it all though, lol.

Berseria is pretty cool though, you got these soul core thingies you can activate with each character and they do different functions depending on who you play as. I will say that you can't really go wrong playing berseria if this is your first tales of game....the battle system is real easy to learn, and those moves you see the characters doing is the special moves you can customize in the order they come out in.

*Personally I liked tales of arise's combat system better overall since I love my air combos/air combat. The air combat in arise I can't lie can be pretty janky, but I just appreciate the effort in namco fitting it in after missing for awhile, lol. Berseria's battle system is still in the better half of tales of games though.*

Honestly, I think it's good as a first entry into the series. I think the reason I hated Berseria's combat so much is because of how drastically different it is to previous games. I wanted to play it in the same way as Symphonia and Vesperia and I just couldn't. So it will probably be more fun, without that expectation

The main thing to know about the combat system is that using attacks relies on your "Soul Gauge." You increase it by stunning enemies, inflicting status assignments, or perfect dodging. But enemies can also decrease your gauge by stunning you or inflicting status ailments on you.

So if you're not careful you can be in a position where you can't really attack much until you manage to land a stun/ailment, or you perfect dodge an attack to get your gauge back up. It can make some encounters feel slow and limiting. But it becomes less of a problem as you progress through the story and the max limit for the soul gauge goes up.
