Somewhere centerish tends to be where things are the best. Sound quality tends to be better than up front and you can see things better than farther in the back.

I'm tall, so as to not be a dick head, I stand at least halfway back. It also sounds better there. If you're "on the rail", you're mostly hearing sound directly out of the amps, and the vocals are very hard to hear

Depends on the show and the crowd. If it's a tame crowd I'll try to get up close so I can watch the band. I avoid pits though and will stay off to the side if there's one.

The only thing worse than paying bar prices is having some asshole bump into you and spill your drink.
