I think it's funny how there's a strategy guide on how to read Discworld, but I'm glad it exists.

Anyway yeah this book is amazing.

Yeah, Guards! Guards! is probably the best starting point. While there were several books written before that it was before Pratchett had really found his voice for Discworld and they largely feel like generic fantasy satire compared to the the majority of the series (which feels like a more cohesive world).

I've wanted to try that series for years, but never got around to it because it's so expensive. Just looked it up on thriftbooks and it's around $330 for the whole set. I had a friend in high school who tried getting me into it a couple times, but I was too busy reading Wheel of Time.

I married someone who has a whole set of the Discworld books.

One of his many good features.

I still say order of print is best, the layers of world building and advancement are cool.

I started my ex on the sectional read through starting with guards a long ass time ago, and she enjoyed it a great deal that way tho.

I started with Color Of Magic.

This.

But honestly, Guard Guards is probably the better starting point. Not only is it the first book in the most iconic subfranchise, it also really feels like the moment that the series clicked for Terry.

As an incidental anecdote, I had a really weird emotional moment over the weekend - my missus was asking for Christmas present ideas (she has anxiety and likes planning ahead) - my absolute first instinct was to suggest the book of unpublished Pratchett stories that is coming out. It was weirdly bittersweet, because the "new Discworld for Christmas" was such a standard part of my life that I was emotional at getting to request something new by Pratchett for Christmas when I never believed I would have that chance again, but also struck by the finality of it that this book coming out represents literally the last words we will ever read from the man. It was an unexpectedly emotionally complex moment, for sure.

GNU Sir Terry. Words in the heart cannot be taken.

OP make sure you eventually check out the Tiffany Aching novels as well (starting with A Hat Full Of Sky). It ties into the overall Witches story thread. Despite being painted as a Young Adult series it is still Pratchett doing what he does best

I started with that one. After going back and reading the earlier ones, I don't regret it.

I've liked others since (especially when relating to the Night Watch) and before though.

For me, the golden era was Pyramids, Guards! Guards!, Moving Pictures and Reaper Man.

I've only read The Color of Magic, Mort, and Reaper Man. I should read more of those books.
