Cait Sith *dies*

Am I missing something? They go "We can't get the thing because the temple will crush whoever gets it"

And Cait Sith goes "I'm just a mascot costume so I'll do it."

Then there's a really long overly dramatic sacrifice scene of him saying Goodbye before "dying"

Then a bunch of Drama bullshit with Sepiroth occurs wherein Cait Sith literally turns up in the very next scene in a middle of a main plot coversation and goes "Yo I'm back with a new suit ,what I miss?"

I never really understood what the point of all that was. Feels like that entire Cait Sith aside could be removed and nothing would change.

Hands down the worst character in any FF game, I don't think I've ever healed or revived him if he fell.

Its all supposed to be tongue in cheek

Final Fantasy games used to kill party members off all the time, so it was a fake-out.

I liked that part, but I have a soft spot for robotic kind of creatures making sacrifices like that.

But yeah I enjoyed that part. It broke a lot of the seriousness for me. I first played when it came out and couldn't skip random encounters. I was still underpowered until Sephiroth,who I could never beat.

Wasn't until I replayed on Xbone that I actually beat it. I'm not great at grinding up.

No, Ultima from 16 takes that cake now. Or maybe Barnabas or even Zenos from 14.

Whats wrong with Quina? In the context of 9, she is the most matured of all the characters. She knows exactly who she is and what she loves. The only growth she needed was to learn that she could share her passion with others.

Also, why Ultima? I dont think he is the best villain, but i liked him. Really creepy, did some messed up stuff, and kind of had that Zeromus vibe and agenda going on. A lot of 16 seemed to call back to 4p1 and 4 in a lot of ways.

It's to lull you into a false sense of security, to reinforce the idea in your head that party members can't really die.

Not long after, Aerith goes off on her own to the City of the Ancients. And then, you-know-what happens, and it hits that much harder.

Ultima was used to retell the story of FF14 in 16 but instead he was a mishmash of every single character responsible for 14's story. He just says words and acts like they mean things. Even the Active Lore can barely explain the words he uses. As a result he's barely even a character.

As others have pointed out, it's before that. However, it does occur at the exact moment Aeris leaves the party for good shortly before getting killed, so with prior knowledge the scene does have its own poignant qualities that Cait Sith's goofy non-sacrifice kinda shits on.

Honestly, I think the implication is that Reeves isn't fully controlling Cait Sith. Cait Sith is instead some kind of AI that Reeves is giving orders to. As you say, this whole moment would be really, really weird if Reeves is manually controlling all of Cait Sith's words and actions.

It also makes more sense if you picture the gameplay being a bit more realistic; if Cait Sith is a fully aware party member traveling with everyone across the world for days/weeks/months, it would make zero sense that Reeves is fully controlling everything Cait Sith does and maintaining his role at Shinra.

i think you understand the point just fine.

it's all of the above. tongue in cheek, fake out, and meant to create humor in an otherwise depressing part of the story.

also the idea of attachment. like he says, despite the fact that it's a remote controlled toy, they were together with the toy for a long time. doing lots of things. even if there's a new toy, he's not the same toy, despite being controlled by the same person. kinda a way of saying each soul or each existence is its own thing.

Quina is great

I am more interested in the schematics of the Highwind, which include propeller engines that turn into jet/rocket thrusters, and which has an escape bridge that turns into a plane. All of which seem to basically have at minimum half the circumference of the planet for range.

Either that the Cait Sith itself (the robot) was self autonomous and gain self consciousness when not controlled by Reeve, or it just made fun of sacrifices only to subvert it with Aerith.
