There were no massacres of villages or anything like that, just two armies fighting.

there were plenty of massacres and crimes against humanity even if the schoolbooks gloss over it

but it was overall a cleaner war because it was less of a typical civil war and more of a country splitting in half and fighting a conventional war

The war also killed a significant number of civilians; battles raged across farm and field, encampments of troops spread epidemic disease, guerrillas ensnared women and children in violence and reprisals, draft rioters targeted innocent citizens, and shortages of food in parts of the South brought starvation. No one sought to document these deaths systematically, and no one has devised a method of undertaking a retrospective count. The distinguished Civil War historian James McPherson has estimated that there were 50,000 civilian deaths during the war, and has concluded that the overall mortality rate for the South exceeded that of any country in World War I and all but the region between the Rhine and the Volga in World War II.

Um what

Like you hear about the civil wars in Europe and China and like entire towns and its inhabitants would get deleted or people rounded up into buildings and set on fire. No stories like that in the American Civil War.

Huh. TIL. Legitimately never heard this.

I learned there was only one civilian casualty throughout the entirety of the war.

the soviet union had over 7 million civilians die in ww2, mostly due to nazi atrocities but some due to stalin abandoning them to starve or be murdered by the nazis

Part of the issue is that people mostly only pay attention to one of the US Civil War's theaters.

Ah. Yep.

Shut up. I'm genuinely trying to learn here.

Googling isn't saying anything about town massacres. Closest was the burning of Atlanta and civilians were evacuated for that.

The first Google result:

Women and children, black and white, were robbed, brutalized, and left homeless in Sherman's infamous raid through Georgia. Torture and rape were not uncommon. In South Carolina, homes, farms, churches, and whole towns disappeared in flames. Civilians received no mercy at the hands of the Union invaders.

It was actually an incredibly brutal civil war, but ironically, it was eclipsed by the Taiping Rebellion occurring at the same time, which historically is the civil war with the highest death count.

I went to school in Georgia which taught me 2 things.

1. I was real confused for a long time (elementary school age) and I thought union soldiers were the bad guys mostly due to...
2. Sherman commited great atrocities throughout Georgia raping and pillaging while burning cities to the ground and they haven't forgotten that so there was a huge emphasis on it in our studies.
