I think it's still going to be a year or two until anything major happens, unless Elon continues on this trend of bungles. In theory they could have kept it going with their patronage levels as a place for people to communicate together that enjoyed the platform if they open sourced and federated the software. However, the most popular instance of bluesky is actually still private at the moment. For now, it's the only instance that matters.
