Runescape just isn't cutting it for me right now and the past year and a half grind has burned me out. Generally I have a philosophy where I can tolerate a game as long as either I can tolerate its developers or its community. If I have issues with both of them, I can't play that game any longer.

My way of discovering games is to... look at /vg/. It is an "accurate" measure of the most active 200 or so games at any given time, and after reviewing what games are active (by filtering out the ones I'm not interested in) I resulted in... 0 games I want to play.

This is a semi-rare occurrence, but it's only gotten worse over the past few years with how many mobile games there are and how utterly uninterested I am in them.

So thread I guess.

I'm still dabbling around in FFXI and DFO. Not hardcore playing them but they're both pretty entertaining still, and often overlooked

No you aren't. People are going to recommend some and then you'll get overly angry about how stupid they sound to you and then close the thread because people didn't validate your self pitying

If you want my real answer, I'd say stop trying to force an interest and do some soul searching for what you actually enjoy
Chewy is that you?

I really can't second this hard enough. You'd genuinely enjoy Factorio, unlike your current approach to gaming of finding something that just feeds an addiction while you mope about never having fun (not that Factorio isn't also addictive, but it's a different sort of addiction than the dopamine drip-feed provided by multiplayer live services). Plus the devs are fantastic and the community's fantastic, so you probably won't find either intolerable any time soon.

I get burned out of single player games very easily as I expect to play them at least 20 hours a week.
I have Prison Architect, I didn't really find any value in it and played Rimworld for around 100 hours when it first came out.

Oh so factorio should last you 3 months easily with mods.

If you aren't careful, you'll end up playing Factorio 20 hours a day. It's not a game people have any difficulty racking up significant playtime in, especially once mods come into the mix. A typical first vanilla playthrough is 30-50 hours, but the bulk of the game comes in what you do after "beating" it, whether that's megabasing, challenge runs, mods (several of which each take 500+ hours to beat), or just building a raycasting engine or video codec for funsies. And all of that time is spent solving engineering, logistics, and optimization problems that are right up your alley from what I can tell about the way you like to think.

If you want a taste of what the game's like, it's got an excellent demo. Give it a shot. You've got nothing to lose except time that you're looking to kill already.

Also, there is multiplayer, but that's more a "find a few friends to play with" sort of deal than a "you're surrounded by other people" one.

Okay my response was probably a bit uncalled for but that's just how pretty much every Judg topic ends up

I play Rocket League but that's about it, if it qualifies as a live service game. I'd be surprised if you like it though. And of course they do battle passes which isn't a practice I endorse, but the game is fun
It's just a thread. People are taking my once-in-a-year gaming related post way too seriously.
Everyone here knows my "gaming habits" by now and how I am extremely picky. I just don't find fun in a lot of games, and investing money into gaming is just a waste of time most of the time. I'll find something eventually. I remember back in 2019 where I didn't even play games for most of that year.

So you want games that you won't be able to beat too quickly, but you also feel that a lot of games are a waste of time? I'm having a hard time parsing what exactly you're looking for. It kinda sounds like you are into games that don't really have a distinct end point, and you want them to be fun, which is perfectly reasonable, but I wouldn't think it's so hard to find one
I have lots of free time, no money and want something interesting to talk with others about. Traditional media struggles to meet my requirements.

Bruh how are you broke after living at home on a software architect salary? I know it's none of our business, but that would explain a lot about why you are the way you are
You're more or less thinking in the right direction. There's reason enough why I choose not to spend money, and if I really wanted to push foor something, I'd have no issues getting it. However for petty things like entertainment, I just don't see the value in spending money right now and that's the path I've been down for the past few years now. This is something of my own choosing.

I just simplify it as "I have no money", because that's the easiest way of explaining it to myself and people who ask.

"I don't have money I feel comfortable spending" is probably the best way to explain it.

If you appreciate something, and want it to continue to exist, you can throw a bit of money that way to help improve the developers live.

I think I missed that. I'm mostly thinking in terms of transparency, willingness to listen to what players want, and the ability to come up with ideas that satisfy what players want without even necessarily being asked. FFF's are a pretty fantastic community relations tool.

Not unusual, really. People take it at different paces, and there's plenty to focus on that takes time but doesn't contribute to the rocket. Is that still just your first map? Or have you fallen into the neverending cycle of restarting repeatedly because your spaghetti gets out of control and you want to start a new base with everything you learned in the last pasta bowl?

That sounds like anxiety, which is something you could work through with a therapist (along with your depression). You can feel happier and more comfortable, dude, and you deserve to. Try taking some steps toward that.
