History of my "main" game when it comes to FOMO live service grinds (min. 1000 hours played)

- 2004-2013, 2022-2023: Runescape (~7000 hours)
- 2009-2014, 2019: Dota/Dota2 (~1500 hours)
- 2011-2013: League of Legends (idk, I'm guessing it was over 1000 hours here)
- 2012-2016, 2020-2021: Star Trek Online (5000+ hours)
- 2013, 2016-2022: Path of Exile (4000+ hours)
- 2013, 2017-2018: Warframe (1000+ hours)
- 2013-2019: CSGO (1500+ hours)

I have not picked up a "new game" since 2013. It's been almost a decade (Started playing CSGO December 2013).
What will be the next game to be added to this list?

I'm pretty sure the only games I've got 1000 hours in are WoW and EU4... Maybe WC3 I played a lot of dota and other custom games.

If we discount idle games (which I would, by their nature), the only games I've broken 1000 hours in are WoW (~250 days /played between 2004 and 2009), DotA 2 (1470 hours) and Factorio (just broke 1000 a couple months ago before PoE pulled me away). I've probably also managed it in PSO 1&2/Blue Burst, but that's split across multiple characters, multiple memory cards, and split between GC and PC (the latter of which I can't check because I don't have it installed and I'm pretty sure Schthack imploded), so I can't really confirm.

It's probably just Runescape and Ocarina of Time for me. Maybe Super Smash Bros Melee and Brawl, too.

RuneScape 2 and Oldschool RuneScape are for sure the leaders for me with something like 950 days of playtime across my 3 main accounts.

Final Fantasy VIII and X are for sure on there with how many replays ive done. Ocarina of Time is a maybe. And For Honor is likely pretty close if not there already, though havent played it in a minute.

Should be it for what all comes to mind.

OoT is like 35 hours, tops. Have you really played it to completion almost 30 times?

Probably still sub 30 but it is for sure getting up there. It is my main game i play for handhelds on the road, especially since burning out on pokemon as of late.

It's crazy to me the amount of games some people have played. Like do these people just play 10+ hours a day, every day?

Although to be fair, I don't know much about RuneScape but iirc there are certain things you can grind while afk

And if I had that kind of time to game I'd probably rather do it getting through big chunks of a system's library, but it always seems like people do it with the same few games. I guess some are just good at getting at our compulsive/addictive nature, I know that certainly I'm not immune to it

For RuneScape it was kind of a big childhood/teenager phenomenon where all my friends were playing it at that time, as well as many people at school (for people who are slightly older their equivalent might be WoW). Though I absolutely get what you mean. I vowed not to play it again as an adult due to just how much of a time commitment it can be.

I don't know what you're expecting, people are largely listing multiplayer games that have been around for at least a decade. A year is 365.25 days so you really only need to put in an hour a day for like 3 years to hit the 1k and a lot of people on a website like this will spend more than one hour a day gaming. Post 7 is really the only major outlier I noticed but there are a number of people who do repeatedly play a small number of games with limited replay value like speed runners.

My 1000+ hour games would be:

Quakeworld Team Fortress (1997-2003)
Ragnarok Online (2003-2005, 2007)
TES V: Skyrim (2012-2017)
City of Heroes (2005-2012, 2019-2021)

I think it's possible Zelda: LttP and DKC2 could make the list too; timeline would be early-mid 90s to about 2000 for frequent gameplay, then occasional/seldom gameplay after that to present.

Other than that, I'm also unsure what the next game will be to be added to the list, I suspect it could be TES VI.

I don't think I have ever played any game over 1000 hours. Hell, I don't think I have played any game (barring a few "idle" games) for over 200 hours. I get bored of them long before that. Looking at my Steam library, Yakuza 5 might break the 200 hour mark if I ever finish it. 150+ hours in and still haven't beaten it, although pretty darn close.

That said, I have probably beaten over 1000 video games in my lifetime.

I just checked my Runescape account, I have over 2000 hours in it. I have two earlier accounts that likely had around 300 hours each, too.

Much of my current account is afk (I often play while I do stuff like marking tests). But I can guarantee even without afk that Runescape (particularly the Old School Runescape that exists now) is my most played game ever.

Mhm theres plenty to afk in RS yeah. To the point that i can do it throughout most my work days unless its an unusually busy day. Currently have been doing Castle Wars for instance which is about 10 seconds of active attention then i can leave it be for 20 minutes without touching it.

And another game on my 1k list was For Honor...which probably about 90% of the time i was playing it i was afking something on Scape. Some of my FF replays as well as the bulk of the games listed in my PSN profile. So the time isnt mutually exclusive.

My overall actual active play time is still that of a no life but Scape time specifically is something to take with a grain of salt.

Almost certainly Minecraft and Stardew Valley for me. Maybe a few other games, but I don't play on PC so I don't really have an easy way to check that sort of thing at a glance.

Maybe the Mass Effect games... if you assume the average run is somewhere around 80 hours or so, I've definitely done more than a dozen runs, so that would work out to 1000+ hours. Maybe Skyrim across every version.

Fallout: New Vegas might make the cut as well, runs are long in that and I've done quite a few, but I'm not sure if it was quite enough to pass the 1000 hour threshold.

The real question is, is that 20 different 100-hour runs or like a single 2000-hour run?

I feel very differently about those two scenarios.
