Restaurants in other countries are also legally forced to provide weeks of vacation time, sick leave, and maternity leave.

So be very aware that McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc are all very much just lying.

Because they but high quality food cheap and sell it at a high enough price to give them a high enough profit so they can afford to pay a living wage.

Can't afford the rent on premises? Can't pay your suppliers? You don't have a viable business.

Can't give your employees a living wage? Eh, let's hope the customers take pity on them.

The restaurant pay their employees, no tips means that they must, God forbidden, pay more!

Because a resteraunt can survive without tips. It's not a big secret.

Its just here in America, both the workers and the resteraunt owners love tipping culture (for different reasons) and fight hard to keep it in place.

I think not enough gets said about overall food prices

The US engages IN HEAVY subsidy for their agricultural sector. They do it to keep prices artificially inflated for farmers. I'm sure other governments have similar protections but for some reason our food prices are just way more expensive. I think it happens when food supply is not centralized or well regulated per region.

Not an expert or anything, purely thought and conjecture. But I am always perplexed as to why American food prices are so high.
