Great that they got Josh Keaton for the voice, but fuck Marvel for not letting them actually use Spider-Man's likeness like they did in the source material. Not going to watch the entire clip but I hope Mark still takes shots at all the "-Man" names in comics when interacting with them.

I wish they actually got Spiderman's design, but props for Josh Keaton!

That's what happened in the comics

I'd be surprised if Amazon even asked tbh. It'd be a bit much for a minute long cameo that'd ultimately distract from the actual plot of the episode.

Damn, that kinda makes the joke fall flat compared to when he met Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man, ... in the comics in short order.

Yeah, I know and I get it. I'd just love for the adaptations to have the same leeway as the actual comics do. I doubt they charged Kirkman a bunch of money for using those characters at the time.

Someone on the comics board reminded me that the crossover doesn't actually happen in the Invincible comic, but a comic published by Marvel. All you see in the actual comic Invincible is Spidey's hand and Ock's back.
So I guess I prefer the scene posted in the OP to what they were allowed to do in the comic. At least we see some of the Marvel published side of things rather than just omitting it completely.

The first page mazingetter posted is from the crossover Marvel published, the second page is from the main Invincible book following that crossover as you can see by them doing the same thing with Batman, just showing enough to have you recognize who Mark is talking to without actually using the likeness.

I actually didn't know that. I wish DC had done something too for Invincible's meeting with Batman

It helped that the original comic book of Invincible is completely owned by Skybound Entertainment, which series co-creator Robert Kirkman (probably best known these days for creating the also-Skybound-owned The Walking Dead) founded, with Kirkman and Skybound publishing the comic via Image while retaining the IP themselves. For a while in the '00s, Kirkman was also writing Marvel Team-Up over at Marvel. So, because he could personally authorize the use of his own character (or if not that directly, then easily convince the rest of Skybound to let Marvel briefly use the IP), and the issue would be published by Marvel, they gave him the go-ahead to write the crossover issue, which basically expanded on that lawyer-friendly cameo from Invincible's own book.

Unfortunately, the stars just didn't align in the same way for DC.

Based on how it was done doesn't seem they had permission to use batman either. Never fully shows batman and invincible never outright says batman.

DC did a similar thing with Deadpool. Brought in a deathstroke from a alt universe who was clearly crazy but anytime he tried to introduce himself he'd get out "dead" and promptly get interrupted by like being punched or something.

Nope. But then, IIRC, the Invincible/Spider-Man crossover issue didn't even get made until some years after that issue of Invincible with the Spidey cameo came out, so it's likely there were never any plans to expand on either of these one-off gags until the stars suddenly aligned on the Marvel side of things. As such, there was just no sense in going to negotiate with Marvel or DC for the right to fully use those characters for such a brief moment in one comic when you could instead include only just enough for readers to know who these characters are supposed to be without also riling up Marvel and DC's lawyers.

IIRC Kirkman didn't have a working relationship with DC at the time. He wrote plenty of stuff for Marvel like Marvel Zombies .

He only says it once.

One of the artists of that story is Ryan Ottley, who was the main artist of Invincible (8-144).
