Current Events > So I'm about 5 hours into assassin's creed origins so far, my thoughts.

*bayek is a great character, best ac protagonist after ezio. He's got heart, but he is a stone cold badass, and it's awesome. The flashbacks that reveal his past with his family are great, and kind of touching. Reminds me of the Russel Crowe gladiator movie actually.

*the gameplay is the best it's been in the entire series. Stealth is very horizon zero dawn-esque. You automatically Sprint now so no holding down the rigger to run. Climbing is done with x/a so no automatically running up walls when running anymore. There are so so so many ways to approach every mission.

*assassination target conversations are back in.

*the world has a shit load of attention go detail. From the landscape, the buildings, the voices being actual northern african voices, etc.. it looks gorgeous.

*the side quests are like witcher 3, having actual story to them and stuff.

*there's shit to discover everywhere. Fuck loads of tombs to raid. Even underwater tombs.

*chests contain actual loot now, making them worth finding. Not worthless shit like in the past.

*not tons of pointless collectibles everywhere.

*three distinct skill trees let you build your character to your playstyle. Plenty of different weapon types to suit this as well.

*can pick up and throw bodies. Hiding them during stealth is vital too.

*combat isn't arkham style like it used to be, it's more like dark souls now. The game is actually fairly challenging at times. I even started on hard mode so it's more challenging, and its brutally fun, really have to use your wits.

Overall I'm really, really liking the game. It's the ancient Egypt game I always wanted, being a huge nerd for ancient Egypt. As for the microtransactions, there's nothing you can't earn through the game normally. They're the same ones they had in unity if you played that. They are there though, can't deny that. It's definitely the most refined the series has been to date.

I've heard the combat compared to Dark Souls half a dozen times now. Is that the only third person game people have ever played?

How does it compare to syndicate? I never finished thst one..got bored AF towards the end. Cleared the map and never beat the story.

Black Flag and Unity are the only AC games I've played, and in both the "eagle sense" (is that what it's called?) would make the screen flash to black and white in a way that made me nauseous if I played too much.

Has that changed?

There's an actual eagle now. I don't know if the screen flashes.

No, it's almost exactly like dark souls though, right down to the controls for it being on the shoulders.

Oh no lol. The world is fucking massive. There's multiple large cities. Siwa isn't that big compared to the ones I saw in a stream. Cairo/giza are in it, as is alexandria(you can go to the library there too lol). The capital is the largest city, and it's bigger than any of the larger cities in ac2. Seriously, I cannot state how fucking huge the map is. And there's towns and cities all over it.

Wolfenstein isn't too long, and Mario is one you can keep coming back to. Three fantastic games coming out on the same day is torture lol.

It does have one. It's not obnoxious at all, nor is it really barely there. It's done well.

There isn't that eagle sense. You have an actual eagle you control from the air that you can use to target stuff and find stuff, and it will also help distract enemies in combat. There's also a pinging ability not involving your eagle that you can use to highlight stuff when you're on foot. It's mostly for tombs and stuff.

Oh and there's no minimap . You have the big map screen, your bird, and a skyrim-ish compass on top.

Yep they did. There's even ship combat in this lol, haven't gotten to it yet but I've seen it in a stream and it's just like black flag but with older weapons and stuff.

You play as a archaeologist investigating bayek to find out something he knew to tell abstergo. It's not so much a modern day story, as filling in some blanks with the past story and how it goes into the lore . That's it really.

Yes. Like I said there's 3 distinct trees. The melee combat is challenging as fuck since I'm on hard mode, so it's a last resort for me. Stealth is actually the best way to play the game. I sneak around in tall grass and pick dudes off with my bow or do stealth takedowns that drag their body into the grass. It has a system similar to mgs5 where when you're spotted, it goes slow mo and you have a brief moment to react, which saves your ass a lot lol.

The dev's have said you can do the entire game without ever touching melee combat outside of a few scripted moments. And so far it's true. I used a sleep dart on the first assassination target then shot him in the head with my bow. Then went in to do the death conversation lol.

Oh and one of the skill tree abilities let's you use sleep darts on animals then tame them so they'll kill for you/be distractions for you. You can do it with lions and shit lol. Oh and it has experiences with animals like in red dead redemption. I've been jumped by a leopard and a hippo already.

Also, one of the little touches I like, it's silly, but I like when if you stand idle for a bit, your falcon lands on your arm. >_>

I'm not defending them. They're there. But they're like previous ac games, time savers at most. I've already found a legendary weapon that's pretty neat.

I'm not overly familiar with the AC series as a whole, but I always figured a game known majorly for its campaign doesn't really have any business using microtransactions.
