Apparently she said it to quote a movie or something idk it'll probably be on the news I'll post it then.

I know I'm basically a hypocrite but I hate drama so much. We had a "link arms" thing to support races.

If she's quoting some kind of media in a teaching setting, I don't see the problem

Certain people really have no grip on how to deal with race issues

I agree and even though I didn't have this teacher people seemed to like her. It's kind of a shame she got fired

I mean, if she's quoting a Samuel L Jackson movie just because she's a fan, that's not cool. But if she's quoting Huckleberry Finn because it's the curriculum...

Last week in lunch, Riley says to a classmate, 'Can a n**** borrow a french fry?' And my first thought wasnt oh my God, he said the word...the n word. It was: now how is a n**** gonna borrow a fry? N****, is you gonna give it back?!"

This. There are several curriculum-based reasons why the n-word would be used and for the most part people are okay with that because those same classes also typically acknowledge the historical significance of the word and why it shouldn't be used today. Huck Finn is a good example.

But if it's being used outside of strict curriculum matters...that's very not okay.

I'm not surprised. Nowadays, a college professor could repeat the word while reading a passage from classic literature and there would be riots on campus and more demands for trigger warning and safe spaces. And the professor would most likely be fired.

I had a friend in that class say she was quoting a movie and one kid got offended and today emailed everyone saying to not support racism, that's all I know.

That's because you're old. People used to have a modicum of common sense. Nowadays, people are looking to be offended by anything.

I was incredibly shocked that the word was spoken, regardless of the context, Byrd said. I turned to the classmate sitting next to me and asked if this was really happening. Before I left the classroom, I was in tears.

Imagine if they listened to a Dr Dre or Snoop Dogg song.

I think at the start of each college year they should take all the students into a room and just put up a projector, and play a film with all the most offensive words, phrases, and concepts that they possibly can, and just play them on loop.

If college is about preparing people for the world, then these are things that exist in the world. You can't break into tears everytime they happen.

Sure, it's not right to go around purposely offending people, but if someone does say something mean to you, you should be able to tank it and move on with life.

If theyre actually on tenure at the university they cant be I believe. Its a pretty sweet deal. Its similar to being appointed to the Supreme Court - its for life unless they voluntarily step down. They would face some type of discipline though if reported, maybe. Worst case would be pressure to resign, from the administration or students. But good luck getting a professor to give up a cushy gig. (The article somebody posted was about an assistant professor, who could just be fired).
