Not really surprising, I'm sure Zelda has a fairly long development cycle. Like the article says they started on BotW right after SS and the Wii U ultimately didn't even end up getting it's own exclusive new mainline Zelda game because it flopped so hard. The good news is that BotW came so early this gen that there's a chance of the next one actually being squeezed out in this gen as well even if it's the tail end and gets remastered or ported to next gen too.

BotW was originally a Wii U exclusive, they delayed and ported it to the Switch to help with its launch.

Nintendo did the exact same thing with Twilight Princess, which was originally a GCN exclusive, but was delayed and released on the Wii first.

I hope they continue pushing forward with open-world sequels. Although if Nintendo is looking for ways to innovate the series at this point, maybe they could consider throwing some roguelike elements into the next game. It might be interesting to explore a randomly generated world with random equipment drops that have random properties.

This game will ultimately decide the direction the series goes in. Following tradition or shaking things up.

My Wishlist

1. Real Dungeons. There doesn't have to be a lot, but jesus christ the "dungeons" in BotW sucked so much ass.

2. Remove shrines, replace with traditional caves and grottos.

3. Bring back the hookshot and magic.

4. It doesn't need Ganondorf, but a more humanistic villain would be nice.

5. And just because it's a wishlist and I don't give no fucks, bring back transformation masks or some way for us to play as a Goron and Zora (and introduce Ruto). That shit is fun.

Majora's mask did what it did through heavy reuse of OoT assets.

I doubt they will reuse stuff from BotW because that game was built for the Wii U first and foremost. They will likely want something tailor made for the Switch.

For me personally, Goron rolling is the massive rotting albatross around MM's neck that keeps it from being the flawless masterpiece the rest of the internet wants it to be. So I'd prefer putting my imagination towards something else.

Development cycles for games now aren't really comparable to the N64 era. They'd likely have to reuse a bunch of assets and for it to only half feel like a new Zelda. If they want to actually do something actually new like they generally do with Zelda, it's going to be awhile.
They'd be better of just doing some kind of expansion for BotW if that's how they were going to do it.

I hated the precision rolling puzzles, but if you had enough open space it would be fun to cruise around.
