It wasnt for me. I had a tendency to get attached to my characters and have trouble treating them as stats to throw around/away. The game heavily encourages thinking about your characters like that from what I could tell.

Thats a personal issue with the game however. Its a really damn good game.

Minimal story
Kinda select classes
In theory, it has a good engine but the game just isn't fair. Too many traps and enemies are way stronger than you and... you're not supposed to win. It's not hard, its just an abuse simulator.

it does have a story, of sorts: you're investigating the writings of your ancestor and delving into this town that seems to be built on top of a portal to another dimension.

the story is thin, and not the focus. the focus is the gameplay.

you don't exactly 'create' a class; you recruit heroes off a bandwagon and assemble a party of four to send into one of four (eventually a fifth option opens up) sections of the town's underbelly in order to uncover the truths your ancestor hints at.

the classes themselves are pre-written and have set combat statistics, but you control how their gear (which drives HP, defense, and to hit/damage) improves as well as which of their seven combat actions (you can equip four) and camp actions (again, equip three or four) will be advanced. they gain experience from their quests. they also gain quirks, which can be good or bad. the trend is mildly negative--good quirks eventually fill up and start replacing themselves, whereas bad quirks simply lock in over time. you can spend gold to remove bad quirks, or lock-in good ones. you spend the same gold to level your heroes or improve their gear, so you have to manage it. they also gain 'stress', which eventually makes them go insane (very bad!) and potentially start hurting your other heroes or themselves and you'll have to spend gold to mitigate this.

it is fun, but it's heavily dice-based. random chance can TOTALLY fuck you even if you did everything right. you can make choices which will mitigate this to some degree. but many such choices will actually reduce the quality of the loot you find. OTOH, the creators have introduced a new failure condition to the entire campaign, in which if you either take too long or lose too many heroes, your campaign simply fails--the reason for the former will be revealed in the game, for the latter it's just heroes don't want to work with you anymore.

The failure condition is only on the highest difficulty. And the reason for the second fail condition is actually the blood/life energy(?) of your dead heroes feeds the Heart and causes it to wake up early

I love this fucking game. One of the absolute best indie titles and a shining example of doing a lot with little.

You have to learn the mechanics though, because this game won't hold your hand. Shit will hit the roof, characters will die, progress will be set back but you learn more and more until those situations become less and less.

The story is pretty good, it's told in portions and you kind of piece it together ala Dark Souls. The dialogue both written and spoken is very flowery but fitting, it gives you just enough.

There are a lot of classes, typically classic RPG archetypes but with a unique spin. Lepers for example, are guys that are the big, lumbering giants that can soak damage. Jesters boost the party up with buffs, afflict the enemies with debuffs, and can hit monster damage in certain positions.

The best part IMO is the music. One of the absolute greatest OSTs in modern times.

iirc the highest difficulty has two failure conditions, but the 'middle/normal' difficulty has one. i can't remember which is which but i'd assume it's only the highest that ends the game if you let too many heroes die, whereas the normal just has the (VERY generous) time condition

its been a while since i finished. did they change it?

Yeah. Fail conditions are only on the highest difficulty.

I really want to like it because it has a fun combat system and a great atmosphere, but trying to level up multiple parties while keeping them alive and sane is just too much of a grind.

If you like roguelikes you'll love it IMO.

If you don't, refer to darkmans post.

My opinion on it:

Yes, in a very Dark Souls-esque way. It is there but it never gets in the way.

You recruit adventurers of various classes and you get to customize their skills. You can customize appearance, but there is only four palette swaps to choose from. You aren't the characters, they are your employees. And they will probably die. A lot.

Yes, it's amazingly fun. The main complaint that I hear is mostly that the RNG can sometimes screw you through no fault of your own, but some people love that.
