Sophie and Hroar have a fox, and Vigilance the dog from Markarth.

I feel kind of bad because I didn't know about Meeko until after I bought a dog.

Yeah, my son did. My daughter just plays with other kids. My son keeps to himself and hangs out with his crab.

Yup. That includes unusual ones like Mudcrabs for the boys and Foxes for the girls. If you have the Special Edition where Bethesda is pushing paid mods there's a Dwarven Mudcrab pet for the Dragonborn that has been free for several weeks.

You can have 2 pets.
You can buy Vigilance the dog at the Markarth stables for 500 gold.
At Meeko's shack you can bring Meeko home for free.
I've heard there are stray dogs roaming around but I haven't seen any.
Your kid may ask to adopt a fox, skeever, spider or mudcrab. They may also ask for a rabbit but I think that's a rarer pet.

It's more than that. Since it comes with a spell to teleport it to you, and can be sent off to cities, you can use it in a few circumstances: if you're the thieving type it can bring lockpicks to you in jail, if you want scrolls or potions on call it can hold 36 of either, if you get slightly overencumbered you can dump an item on him and send him to a city, etc.

They come from random encounters where you find them fighting Skeevers or Wolves. Unfortunately they have a somewhat rabid disposition, attacking you if you try to heal them. That's a trait they share with Vigilants of Stendarr; who I end up using as loot pinatas.

You can always tell them no or "not now" and they'll bring home something else.

Mine always brought home foxes.

Not that great since you hear the fox's obnoxious panting constantly.

I wasn't planning on adopting kids but I killed Grelod, then Hroar came up to me, and told me he was named after a luon's roar, then preceded to show my Khajiit how he roars. How could I not? Sophie was an easy choice as well, living in the snow. My Dragonborn married Moth Gro Bogal from Markarth.
Does your Sophie also have the basket glitch?

Yeah, Sophie got the glitch, but you can avoid it by buying all her baskets before adopting her. I learned that too late tho. My Nord Shieldmaiden married Farkas because he's a big ol' puppy.

From what I've read the only way to get rid of the glitch is to invest in her 'Flower Shop' with the Merchant perk.
It's probably ridiculous but I just pretend that being in the cold for so long has weakened her so she can't carry much as a result.
I give her $1000 whenever she asks for an allowance and leave her jewels, snacks, clothes and toys in her dresser.

I'm pretty sure you can't kill kids in vanilla Skyrim, so I guess it was one of the ~80 mods I installed that let me accidentally kill my adopted kid with a spell after I accidentally banished her pet to an alternate dimension using some Naruto spell

IIRC she had a stupid pet too
