So I was just browsing through Hulu the other day and saw that Sixteen Candles was there. I needed something in the background while playing MHW and decided to just watch it, imagine to my surprise when boobs came up, not just a flash in the background but full on full frame in the shower close ups leading to a full body view later. This shocked me so I went to google and learned that, yup, sixteen candles was rated PG, mind blown.

Ratings decay has been a thing since roughly forever, or at least since the ratings started in 1968.
Most of the "G" movies from the 60s and 70s would be at least PG nowadays, and PG-13 didn't even exist until after some faces melted in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

It can still be pretty good if they push it, I seem to remember there being some real gory pg 13 movies, maybe there's just not much swearing.

Obviously, they know that R rated super-hero films are always going to flop, they don't want to be the next Blade:Trinity, the last try by a studio to put a R rating on a super hero movie.

That's a shame. The only justification is that the ensuing Carnage movie will be rated R.

Even though I loved Venom and Carnage as a kid I only read one actual comic with them in it. It showed Carnage as a kid pushing his grandmother down the stairs but I didn't see gore or anything. Does it really need to be R to be faithful? Genuinely asking, not arguing.

It's a little sad that people want every superhero to be R-rated now just because two or three of them got away with it. It's okay to have superhero movies for adults, but you shouldn't expect every icon to have a movie that is geared exclusively toward adults.

Kids are the natural audience for superheroes. They're the demographic which wears the most superhero costumes at Halloween. They're the demographic which plays with the most toys. They were the demographic which read the most comics back when comics were profitable.

It's silly to think only for yourself. Let the next generation get into comic books at the same age you were when you first discovered superheroes. And let them find their Crow or Judge Dredd in due time instead of trying to rob them of Superman or Spider-Man because you think every hero you grew up with should be exclusive to your generation.

It was never going to work without Carnage anyway.

No one wants every superhero to be R-rated. They want R-rated comic books when an R rating is what's best suited to that particular character. Venom is edgy. Venom kills people. Venom eats their guts and their brains.

But most people in our age group got introduced to this character in a 90's cartoon for children that banned guns and punching. Even now I'd say more people are familiar with kid friendly Venom than brain eating Venom.

This movie looks generic as fuck and the PG rating will be the least of its problems. I'm much more annoyed by the fact that they're making this a solo thing instead of a Spider-man spin-off. Kids and young teens will be the audience who likes it the most so a PG rating makes sense in this instance. I doubt adding gore and swearing will fix any of the issues this movie will have.
