I refuse to play this until I go through Syndicate and Origins but Odyssey is the most excited I've been about Assassin's Creed since they dropped the Desmond storyline.

Are the games all stand alone now?

Since dropping the Desmond story, they still have a modern world aspect but you're just playing some no-name mook and you can skip most of it if you're not interested. It's barely relevant, more a kind of peace-offering for people like me who greatly enjoyed that aspect of the games.

Couldn't say with Syndicate/Origins and Odyssey, though.

I haven't played Origins yet, but Syndicate has one particular piece of lore it was pushing hard, especially towards the end. IIRC it was introduced in Black Flag: the First Civilization woman whose consciousness exists inside the Animus or some such

I haven't been following this game much, since I don't want to spoil it for myself, but Exploration Mode seems like the best addition to the series ever imo.

I've been saying on here for years that the first Assassin's Creed was the only one that really let you turn off the mini-map and find things on your own. NPCs and quest-givers describe what you're supposed to do in enough detail that you can rely on just viewpoints and exploring/memorizing the cities. Ever since AC2, you pretty much need the mini-map, since icons on the map are the only indicators you get.

If it's handled right, this may end up being my favorite AC game too (despite not caring that much for the setting). I just hope they tone down the obsessive upgrade/hunting system.

You mean the upgrade/hunting stuff? I can live with it, but the amount of materials to max out was kind of ridiculous. I got sidetracked from so many missions because I'd see animals or soldiers nearby that had materials I needed.

Tbqh if:

A) I didn't know it'd be on sale for $30 black Friday
And
B) I'm still balls deep in Divinity original sin 2 and don't want to abandon it before red dead 2 comes out.

I'd totally get it now
