I don't understand the intense hatred for DNF. I had an absolute blast with it. Yes, you can see some obvious scars of different development time lines (two weapons to compete with Halo when it first came out [later patched] for example) and the stupid ass end boss. But it was a game where you blew things up with a rocket launcher and looked at boobs. I don't know what else anyone was expecting from a Duke Nukem game? I would say that it was a bunch of punk ass little COD kiddies that never grew up playing the original DOS shooters, but I know quite a few Duke Nukem fans that hated it. I just don't understand. It was literally a game about shooting stuff and ogling women. That's the entire premise of Duke Nukem since 3, and almost since #2 (as his personality started to be more developed.) I had so much fun, I played through it 3-4 times.

That said, I wish a good company (not the current owners of the property, Gearbox is absolute garbage) would make a Duke Nukem 5. (Get it, Duke Nukem Three D, Duke Nukem Four-ever.) Especially before Jon St. Jon dies of old age.

Did you guys know JSJ (Duke's voice) did Big the Cat in Sonic Adventure??? Once I found that out, I couldn't un-hear Big the Cat just sounding like Duke Nukem mocking a slow person...

It was a fun mediocre shooter that was just a victim of its hype, just happy it came out unlike Half life 3

It wasn't nearly as bad as people say, but it wasn't really a "good" game, either.

I had an absolute blast watching my brother play it(and he had fun playing as well).
The DLC where Duke is in space(can't remember what it was called) was just ridiculous.

I had a blast with it too. I platinum'd/100% the game and all DLC.
The DLC with the strip club in the middle of nowhere was the best.

That one wasn't as good as the strip club DLC, like, not NEAR as good.

What hype? It wasn't like it was saying for 12 years or whatever it was going to change everything and be the best shooter ever made. It was a victim of its own infamy.

It wasn't a bad game by any stretch, it was basically just a Duke Nukem game but released in recent memory.

Honestly, my memories of the game is pretty foggy. Wasn't there a stripclub in the main game though? That part was pretty neat as well.

From the space-DLC I just mentioned, I don't remember much from it except how there was air vents on the moon where Duke could breathe and the fact that he takes a huge breath before he exits the vehicle. I feel like you could only do shit like that in a Duke Nukem game. In any other game it wouldn't probably work at all.

i too don't get all the hate. i thought it was quite ambitious. i mean what other fps shooter lets you grab a marker and lets you draw on a dry wall. or let you go up to an air hockey table or pinball machine and play it too. terrible pinball machine and air hockey but still lets you do it.

All I can remember of DNF was the original strip club part where you could get some action at a glory hole, and if you jumped and looked over the door it was a dude in the other stall

It was ok, as long as you came in with low/no expectations.
No game could ever have lived up to that much hype-there was some sort of weird idea it had over a decade of dev time when it was really just a regular year or 2. when you look at it realistically, it's basically a mindless middle of road shooter, like a serious sam with more fart jokes.

I have more fun playing Quake II than I enjoy playing anything released in the last 5+ years, save the new Doom. Modern video games are utter garbage, just like Hollywood. 99/100 new movies suck complete ass. There's 1 tolerable one every 5-6 years maybe. Fucking kids with their Call of Duty 78: The Great Modern Jungle/Desert M16 War only $59.99 at Walmart, with part of the game removed and sold to you as Day 1 DLC for $29.99! If you pre-order at GameStop, you can have your M16 rifle decked in 2 jungle camos, not just one! EXCLUSIVE!

Get off my fucking lawn.

Sigh. I don't think I'm made for this world, anymore.

I remember it being about 40 seconds for every loading screen on console.
Every time you died you had to wait almost a minute to try again. Couple that with the fact that it's ridiculously easy to die on the hardest difficulty, it can get quite aggravating.

I don't really feel like I need to explain my reasoning on why DNF is a bad game. Any reasonable human being could tell you that it's an ugly, awkward mess of a game, suffering from a severe case of identity crisis; Between the terrible script, clunky controls, and horrendous loadtimes, it's a game completely devoid of "fun" in any capacity.

Nah, it's pretty fun. It definitely lacks in many of the innovations that have come to us in the FPS genre over the decade-plus DNF spent in development hell, but it's still a goofy Duke Nukem game at it's core. Controls are fine, and loadtimes aren't much of an issue unless you're on console. Terrible script... again, it's Duke fucking Nukem. Not exactly a paradigm intellectual pursuits. If you expect a great story from Duke Nukem, you're already setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you're going into it expecting the next Bioshock or something, even something along the lines of the newer Wolfenstein entries, of course you'll be disappointed. But it's not suffering from any sort of identity crisis. It's a Duke Nukem game, through and through. A Duke Nukem game that sat in development for nearly fifteen years, watching the FPS genre evolve and surpass it's previous entry in every conceivable way, trying to adopt some of those evolutions for better or worse... admittedly mostly for worse. But if you take DNF for what it is and don't expect it to be something it's not and never will be, it's plenty of fun.

I enjoyed it, and to this day I will defend it and say it is a ton of fun. The 100% achievement completion on my Steam profile proves that, no way would I have completed it 100% if I didn't have fun with it.

I think people who complain about it were expecting something ground breaking and/or a technical marvel from a AAA studio. Umm...it is Duke Nukem! The guy is basically a parody of every 80's action star made by a 90's indie development studio (Apogee) who were known for releasing out-of-date shareware PC games. Hell, not only was the game engine for Duke Nukem 3D out-of-date before it was even released, but it was coded by someone who was still in high school and never had any formal programming experience before or after creating it. Expecting the sequel (which had a 15 year development cycle, and was remade from scratch 3 times) to be something amazing is asinine.
