Probably due to the inconsistent lack of books/codexes (codecies)... I mean, it feels like 8th finally got all their books up and then BAM, new edition already.

Anyways, I play Salamanders.

I'm painting a Stormraven right now, it's literally 2 inches from my hand... so far it's just undercoat with leadbeacher. I have to assemble the glass (well, plastic) canopy, which means I need to paint the servitor gunner before I glue it in, and I don't know what to do with him

...

I asked on reddit, on 40k lore, I'm not sure if servitors wear Chapter scheme, Mechanicus scheme, or neutral scheme

Servitors don't use chapter colors. You can do them in a Mechanicus or neutral scheme. New SM book drops in October.

Book bloat in Warhammer is ridiculous now. I imagine the profit margin on the books must be quite large, but still.

Good grief. Last I played was 5th edition I think. Overall how are Tyranids now? Maybe I was just bad at using them but melee carnifex never seemed to work well for me. They either get shot up before getting into melee range or their low WS meant a lot of misses.

How so? I used to buy a codex every now and then to support the Games Workshop store and because the fluff was enjoyable to read. I am kinda curious how the Imperium is like now with Guilliman revived.

i mean, are you gonna try to actually be super competitive? or are you playing friendly games?

unfortunately i dont have time to fuck around much with tabletop these days, but when i did the most fun i ever had was with orkz. the only non grimdark group in the goddamn galaxy somehow.

they are fun to play as or against regardless of outcome.

in other warhammer news, are you gonna play darktide? because everyone can always use more dudes to smash other dudes with.

I think last edition Space Marines got two codexes (one early on and one later), plus a codex add on to buy for each chapter, plus a psychic awakening book with additional rules for each chapter. Plus chapter approved, a yearly update for matched play rules. And then the new edition dropped midway through the year (with additional books to expand narrative and matched play, plus a new marine codex for the fall).

I might be misremembering some stuff.

If you're not super into playing with the full range of options or absolute newest version of each rule (or not playing Marines) it's probably not so bad. But I can't imagine keeping up with the full range of rules for tournament purposes.

I like to build for super competitive, but honestly it's unlikely I'll be able to play with non-family until this pandemic is over

It's called AoS/Age of Sigmar or just plain Sigmar now

8th edition was basically all Ultramarine spam for a while, so much so that when the other factions got buffed all the non-Ultramarine Astartes were kinda bad, but they got adjusted later

Garbage since 7th. Necron are getting a their spotlight this edition the way Orks did last year.

Also, I play a Dreadnought army so the Legends restrictions are very harsh for me... it doesn't come up locally since we allow Legends gear, but if I were to play in a major tournament they wouldn't be allowed

That means no Triple Flamer Dreads or Quad Autos (unless I call them Mortis-Dreadnoughts, which adds another 20 points, but I would want Venerable Quad Autos in the first place)

That is interesting. I played casually so never thought much bout there being a flavour of the month. Though I will admit when my friend played Blood Angel and was using Mephiston. I could not help but wonder if my friend was good at using him and had good rolls or if Mephiston himself was simply too good.

Meganobz are better right now, the meta is basically Marines and Guard... bikers are vulnerable to massed small arms whereas Meganobz resist it - but if playwith with Meganobz you'll need either a deep striker or dajump'r to beef enemy artillery first.

I like the setting, but my knowledge of it stems more from the old tabletop RPG and the HeroQuest/Advanced HeroQuest board games. I was never really able to get into the idea of minis, especially since focusing on combat over roleplaying is pretty much the opposite of what I find interesting.

I also enjoyed the novels by "Jack Yeovil" (Kim Newman's pseudonym).

Another thing is Heavy Bolters are being buffed to D2, so any multi-wound models you have that are particularly vulnerable to heavy bolters will be in trouble.

Not sure if it's going to be only Astartes HBs or all HBs, cuz if it's all HBs when Guard will be buffed a fair lot since they have HBs on everything

They "rebooted" the setting in 2015, to make it more similar to 40k (and then ironically have been making changes to 40k inspired by AoS...). Chaos blew up the world, survivors resettled in another solar system (but with discworlds), and then chaos invaded that.

The main difference now is that most of the forces are the direct servants of a specific god (or gods), who actively helps them or fights along side them. So while in WHF divine intervention was something mostly reserved for chaos, now most of the factions have it and they almost all have chaos warrior equivalents (basically demi god type characters).

I love AoS because there's no "Space Marine" army. Pretty much all the armies are equally popular. You go to a local store (at least pre-Covid) and you'll find people playing different stuff, unlike 40K where it's 9 people playing Marines and 1 guy playing Orks.

I think there was the clear intent for Stormcast to be the Space Marine army, but they never quite took off sufficiently to justify it. While they've had more releases than any other faction (by far), they've at this point gone over a full year without any kind of products added to the range.

Sometimes people say shit like "I can't wait for Hallowed Knights to get their own book and model range" and I'm like "noooo what are you doing don't you know where that path leads"

Oh yeah, I'm totally aware of the Age of Sigmar reboot. I used to hang out on /co/ and /tg/ years ago, and they wouldn't shut up about how much they hated it.

Well everyone hated it at launch because it didn't have a balanced rule set, it was just throw everything you have on the table and fight it out.
Then it actually got rules and essentially became a streamlined version of 40k.

Normally I'd guess this might just be an updated video game version of the old board game... but Avalon Hill is the board game/wargaming branch of Hasbro, so I could see this being an updated re-release of the old game. Or a new version entirely (potentially leaning more into the D&D IP rather than the Warhammer one, because Hasbro already owns D&D but would have to negotiate licensing issues with Games Workshop for Warhammer).

I kind of stopped playing 40k around 7th edition. 6th edition was fucking awful and while 7th was a definite improvement, it was still way too bloated. I played one game of 8th when it came out and didn't really care for it (though, to be fair, I didn't give it much of a chance). I still do the modelling side of things (I have three full companies of Ultramarines and bits of a fourth, about 10k points worth of Imperial Guard, and roughly 2-3k each of Eldar, Tyranids, and oldschool Necrons).

These days I mostly split my tabletop time between Ninth Age (super enjoyable fan-made sequel to Warhammer Fantasy Battles after the latter morphed into AoS) and Star Wars Armada. Would highly recommend either.
