Bleach is lame, it's just trolling and the same plot twist of betrayal. Too predictable.

Naruto has been consistently good for the past few weeks, and OP finally has Strawhat action, and Hodi is still lame.

I pity the foo who doesn't think Hunter X Hunter is the best thing in SJ.

I might think HxH was the best if it actually stayed in WSJ and could release more than 30~ chapters every 3 years or so.

So I'm watching Rurouni Kenshin for the first time since like 2001 or so. And back then I didn't watch it all the way through the first season even.

Wow, the second season is so much better so far.

My memory is kind of fuzzy on Rurouni Kenshin, but isn't a lot of season 1 filler? or am I thinking of a different season?

No, you're quite right. The difference in seasons so far is almost night and day. The first season had a few trilogies where things would get kind of interesting but they weren't regularly interconnected or anything.

So far the second season is one big storyline and so the pacing is a lot better and the plot and cast feel much more urgent.

Ah yes the kyoto arc. The climax is one of my favorites of any shonen manga. It's too bad the anime didn't cover the arc after, but enjoy what you got!

I've never watched it but my experience with anime filler tells me it's definitely a no.

I think they were intending to eventually get back to the manga material, but was canned before they could, so it's not exactly something that was even meant to be "good" by any means.

Probably comparable to the 100 episodes of Naruto filler which I also hear sounds like garbage.

If it's as bad as Naruto filler....then yeah, I'd stay away from it.

If you find yourself really loving the characters and just need to see more antics go ahead.

I'm not the most knowledgeable B8er on the wide world of anime production but somehow I'd always kind of assumed if you were an anime based on a really popular manga you wouldn't get cancelled rather unceremoniously. I read that the makeshift series finale didn't even show up until the DVD release.

It's kind of amazing to think that a show as good as this is proving to be during the Kyoto arc could get the plug pulled on it like that. Were there more viewers during this portion of the series at least?

And yeah, the Jinchuu thing. I don't know anything about it other than the fact that my ex was all like "is this guy in the anime? I heard he isn't which is sad" last night to me over AIM and she showed me the main villain of that arc. And I was like "not to my knowledge" and she was like "LOLWUT."

Hell yeah Kenshin is best. The filler 3rd season is not worth watching, I sold those DVDs almost immediately after watching 'em personally.

But, definitely read the Jinchuu arc, picking up right where Kyoto left off. It's awesome. Also the Trust/Betrayal OVA series which adapts the flashback from the Jinchuu arc is very good. The other OVA they made later is filler of the worst kind, the worst thing ever, ignore that I'd say.

Somehow I always figured you for a Kenshin fan... Kenshin.

Would you say the end of the Kyoto arc makes for a somewhat satisfying end to the anime? Just curious. It always feels awkward watching a final episode that doesn't feel final. In this case there's a good reason for that -- it isn't -- but since the third season is so universelly lol'd at... yeah.

And yeah, I'll read the Jinchuu arc afterward.

I'd say so, feels like a decent ending for the anime. Still my favorite anime series.

And Jinchuu is great to read from there since it literally picks up exactly where the Kyoto arc left off.

what happened to kenshin is why most modern shonen anime are a lot more careful about catching up too close to the manga. most people agree that the jinchuu arc was at least as good as the kyoto arc, but, iirc, after the end of the filler garbage that made up the last 3rd of the kenshin anime, the jinchuu arc wasn't very close to being done in the manga. the filler hemorrhaged viewers too fast and, with no end in sight to the manga, they pulled the plug.

and psycho_kenshin is absolutely right. stay the hell away from the second ova. jesus christ, it's so contrary to the intention and tone of the series that's it's a goddamn abomination.

(though, in good news, apparently a new kenshin anime is in the works. fingers crossed for animated jinchuu arc...)

Yeah, I heard about the new Kenshin. I'm wondering if they're trying to copy the success of FMA: Brotherhood (yet another show I haven't watched and need to -- both of them, in fact) and get rid of the various Tokyo arc filler if it doesn't exist in the manga (no clue) and then go from Kyoto to Jinchuu. That'd be kinda cool since while the Tokyo arc had some really nifty trilogies a few of the episodes were like 'lolk'.

meh. i'm all about the manga for fma. even brotherhood cuts out too much for my liking (though it's still totally worth watching).

and yeah, there was a lot of filler in the first third of kenshin. and some of the stuff that is canon happens in a different order in the manga. basically, everything that introduces a character who sticks around or shows up later is in the manga. plus the stuff with jinei and raijuta (but the raijuta stuff is kinda different).

as for the new kenshin, i almost don't want them to retread the first two arcs. but that might be because i don't think anything can top the saitou vs. kenshin fight in the original. i mean, god damn.

I tend to look at things from a "what would attract the most viewers possible" perspective since I've been part of a couple of successful television-related fan campaigns but my lack of expertise on the Japanese television industry means everything I know might be wholly irrelevant. But based on a Western perspective I'd just assume retreading those first two arcs would be a better idea than leaping forward to something with a pre-established cast.

That's why I'd think they'd go the former route even though Kenshin is obviously a pretty damn popular character over there. Again, could be way off.

Yeah, not a big fan of what I've seen 'shonen'-wise lately. I haven't actually watched any recent series, mind you, but I definitely prefer the 90s art style.

I mean her Dende voice is fine, it sounds like it should. I guess I always imagine Lucy to sound more girlish considering the stuff she wears. When Lucy is excited she slips into Dende mode xD

I finished the latest Bakuman. I think the details in the backgrounds are amazing. That page with Fukuda eating the ramen really stood out to me.

Well. 49/62 on the uhh, "true" portions of the Rurouni Kenshin anime.

This has got to be the biggest improvement season-over-season I've ever seen in any show. What I wouldn't do for another couple of years of Kyoto quality.
